London
Hiya
Met you at your book event in Glasgow. I'm from California, in Europe until June, you said to visit London because "it's the best city in the world". What makes it the best and what should I do while I'm there? Already seeing Skinny Lister on the 8th, so that will occupy one night!
(ps: this is really a question for anyone who can tell me anything about London.)
Thanks!

Re: London
I adore London. It's an ancient and endlessly fascinating city. It's literally impossible to be bored here.
Visit Highgate Cemetery, the British Museum, The London Museum, go to Primrose Hill... it's endless.

I am a big fan of walking along the river from Westminster to Tower Bridge.
Beverley, Birmingham, Blackheath, Boston, Cheltenham, Dublin, Donington, Guildford, Hatfield, Hoboken, Knebworth, Latitude, Leamington Spa, London, Manchester, New York, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading, Sayreville, Sheffield, Southend, Wembley, Wolverhampton.
Re: London
Get buses rather than the tube if you have time. You get to see a bit more that way (although be prepared to spend 5 minutes looking at the same bit when stuck in traffic).
Take a trip to Greenwich. You can get there by Thames Clipper if you fancied a change of transport. There's the Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory and the Maritime museum to visit. The top of the hill In Greenwich Park gives you a good view over London.

Re: London
I did this recently (well, not quite as far as Tower Bridge) for the first time in years as a tourist, highly recommended.Evan wrote:I am a big fan of walking along the river from Westminster to Tower Bridge.

Thanks everyone! Definitely going to walk along the river. Now I'm even more excited to see the city!
Re: London
Practically speaking - get an oyster card, as buses don't take change anymore

use this site to plan journeys, the closer to the date of travel you check the more accurate the info will be and you can sort by fastest, least changes, no steps, busses only etc.

I have an interest in Roman history & the Museum of London has some very good roman stuff (as well as some wonderful Neolithic stuff & a ton of other things) & it’s free too

There is also quite a lot of Roman London left to see - here are some good sites about walking the wall, and seeing Roman London, (obviously some info is repeated)

Last time I was in London I walked the canal from the back of Kings Cross to Camden, and then continued up to Regents Park. It’s a lovely walk in the sun and there were ducks, swans, geese, moorhens, coots and a cormorant. There is more wildlife around now its warmer, butterflies are out along the canal and damsel and dragonflies too,
This is info about the regent’s park end of the canal

The nature trails at the crematorium are on my list of things to do...

Re: London
London Zoo is a must, as is Natural History Museum. I'd also say check out a play or a musical, go off West End and you can see some amazing shows for an affordable price.

Re: London
You have to visit the Churchill War Rooms. Secret underground bunker right in the middle of London, has to be seen to be truly appreciated.

Re: London
Wow, thanks Bella for all the links! This is all really helpful.
I'm thinking about trying to see something on West End from the cheap seats, but I'll definitely look beyond West End as well.
Another question though- any recommendations for pubs and the like you'd recommend?

Re: London
second this! Its part of the Imperial War Museum. the IWM itself is free but the Churchill War Rooms (£18) and HMS Belfast (£16) you need to pre book tickets for, btu they are worth it http://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/churchill-war-roomsskhmmxi wrote:You have to visit the Churchill War Rooms. I don't eat out (allergies) or really go to pubs (allergies) but the Camden in Monarch is a safe place to hang out (run by Jay (Beans on Toast) and Dave Danger (The Holloways). They doo nice coffee, have a back garden/patio/smoking area. They do nice chips and I'm told the rest of the food is lovely and good value. They also put on gigs, and club nights.

If you're around Shaftesbury Avenue then De Hems, a Dutch pub on Macclesfield street is good. Good choice of beer.hellaoftroy wrote:Wow, thanks Bella for all the links! This is all really helpful.

Re: London
My sister in law lives in the Twickenham section of London. We went to a very cool pub on the Thames called the Barmy Arms. It is filled with rock and roll history complete with tons of photos and writings about the people & musicians who have been there and who played across the river on Eel Pie Island in the 1960s and 70s. You can walk or bike across a bridge and explore the island, too.
Re: London
Yay Skinny Lister! Not sure if you've seen them live before, but they put on a fucking fine show. Saw them opening for Frank a while ago, had no idea who they were, and immediately loved them so much I almost didn't want Frank's set to start...
