Winchester - Things to see?

Post by Bossman66 » Fri Feb 14, 2014 10:47 am

Hi Frank & forum members

Leaving Exeter for Winchester for the show tonight shortly. Gonna be staying overnight at the Mecure around the corner from the venue.

Can you recommend anything we should try & see in town tomorrow morning?

I understand King Arthur's round table is there somewhere for instance?

The cathedral and the museum in town is quite good :)
There's also a crystal shop if you're into that sort of thing, like me.

There's numerous pubs around town including two directly opposite the guildhall :P

Hi
The round table is in the castle at the top of the high street, its only about a 5/10 min walk up hill from your hotel. If the weathers ok and not too flooded have a wander round the streets behind the cathedral where Winchester college is - (the Queens is a good pub), climb St Catherines hill, go to St Cross hospital.

+ you could visit some of the places that Frank talks about in Wessex Boy :) Theres the Buttercross which is a monument in the middle of the high street, have a walk along Jewry street (several pubs along there including Weatherspoons), walk up to the Railway pub etc. He talks about a place called the Riverside which has now been renamed as Bishop on the Bridge however I think you might have trouble sitting on benches near that at the moment cos its all a bit wet round there!
Might bump into you at the guildhall later!

I quite like going for a walk down the water meadows, but I guess at the moment that is better for a swim than a walk.
