Creative piece based on FT lyrics

Post by smige2 » Sat Aug 10, 2013 5:55 pm

During my final term of my English degree I took an optional module on autobiography, in which we read classic autobiographical works in order to writing our own creative pieces. One week we looked at experimental autobiographies, and I wrote a piece which documented episodes of my life and related them to Frank's lyrics - specifically, lyrics which I would have been listening to at that particular time. I thought I would share it on here in case anyone's interested.

The period covered is from the summer of 2008 (the summer after finishing GCSEs, when I started listening to Frank), through to the summer of 2011 (after my first year at university). I was careful to only use a lyric if the song had been released at the time I was referring to, not that anybody would have noticed! As a result of writing this, my tutor went out and bought Love Ire & Song, which I thought was cool.

Let’s begin at the beginning. August ‘08: Standing in a dense crowd beneath a large marquee, my arm outstretched and my index finger pointed diagonally upwards. I scream back the words I learned merely a few months before. I am sick and tired of people who are living on the B-list! People give mocking glances but I don’t care. I’ve never been happier.

Monday morning comes a-crawling in. Back to school in Hitchin. In the sixth-form common room it’s impossible not to notice the absence of certain people. But it doesn’t matter; we’re going to keep in touch. Whatever else may be, I will not forget my friends.

October ‘08: a small venue in King’s Cross. This time near enough to make eye contact and even more enthusiastic. So come on, let’s be young, let’s be crass enough to care! He leans into the audience and my friend briefly sings down his microphone.

Friday evening barely even begins. A living room filled with teenagers, the air permeated by cigarette smoke and the unfamiliar smell of vodka. People dancing, looking happy. Me sat uncomfortably in the corner. The night progresses; people start pairing up and locking lips. I step outside and put my earphones in. Music is my substitute for love.

January ‘09: a small venue in Cambridge. Leaning on the barrier at the front. So come on, let’s be young... The same songs as before. He dives into the crowd. I try to replicate my friend’s microphone-sharing moment and we bang foreheads.

Countless hours spent in my bedroom with an acoustic guitar. Quick, turn off your stereo, pick up that pen and paper! I willingly oblige. Attempts at originality overshadowed by obvious influences. We write love songs in C and we do politics in G... It’s extremely cathartic.

October ‘09: a big venue in Shepherd’s Bush. London Town trembles at the sight. It’s not so easy to get to the front now.

Countless hours spent reading. Life is too short to live without poetry. It has become more than a hobby. Pentameter in attack, iambic pulse in the veins, free verse powered off the streetlight mains... I think I am going to pursue this further.

So here we are, last chance saloon. One year to go before everything changes. The past seven years haven’t always been perfect, but I know there are things I will miss. In the end, the journey's brought joys that outweigh the pain.

Countless goodbyes and a few farewells. It can be overwhelming at times, but I know this is something I have to do. So you can strike my name from the roll call; when night falls, I’m leaving.

December ‘10: Leicester. I’ve made it. As always, I’m stood near the front, my arm outstretched and my index finger pointed diagonally upwards. Once we were young and we were crass enough to care... Some things don’t change.

I drink because I'm thirsty. Dozens of people crammed into a small fluffy kitten, jeering. A messy assortment of cans and bottles. Me stood uncomfortably in the corner. I try to join in, but I can’t relate to their culture. What if it’s over, and we’re sober, and we still feel like we’re fixing to die? I don’t understand it.

Befriending musicians and songwriters. The ones who have to take the stage and sing the truth. We start to play - separately at first, and then together. Toilet-circuit touring stops, bedrooms, bars and bunker squats... People don’t always listen but it doesn’t bother us. It’s our way of life.

Not everyone grows up to be an astronaut. Not knowing what I’ll do when this is all over. I fight my indecision, hoping something will materialise. No-one gets remembered for the things they didn’t do.

April ‘11: A car park in Shoreditch. Hundreds of people there to celebrate. A thousand nights I’ve played! I’ve been at eleven of them. It’s becoming excessive, but I still enjoy it.

There's something about coming back to your hometown again. Back in Hitchin for summer. Despite the little changes, this place still feels the same. The pubs, the church, the countryside - everything just as it was. True to my word, I meet up with my old friends. When I'm here, I'm home.

Looking ahead as another year approaches. I resign to accepting uncertainty. The only thing that’s left to do is live.
