A Wedding Reading - Eeek!

Post by SB » Fri Jun 21, 2013 12:09 pm

A friend asked me to write a reading for her wedding. What a bloody difficult task. Anyway, here's what I came up with... It is, as yet, untitled.

Two people sit, side by side,
Not speaking, just silently sitting.
Their clothes are casual, their shoes are worn,
Each carry a bag: hers red, his brown.
Both bags are overflowing, but the contents cannot be seen.
Their bags are not filled with hankies and phones,
No purse, no lipstick, no keys can be found inside the bursting leather.
What fills each bag is far more precious than any object,
No jewel in any crown could replace what lies within.
For his bag, and hers, contain the roads they have travelled,
The journeys they’ve made, and the paths that they’ve trodden.
The days that they wished would never end;
Days spent together in the summer sun, laughing and drinking.
And then the days that felt never ending,
Oppressive and bleak, where sleep could not come quickly enough.
They hold the memory of each phone call, each message, each birthday card, each letter.
The holidays they spent under blue skies, and those huddled together in rainy England.
Every embrace, touch, and kiss is held inside those bags.
The bags that are filled with everything they have shared,
The things that unite them,
That change them from two halves in to one whole.
With all the things that are contained within those bursting seams,
People may ask how they’re held together.
The one word answer may seem simple, but things are never always that easy:
The answer is love.
Those seams aren’t held together with cotton, you see,
Because no thread could possibly contain what’s held within.
But love knows no limits, no force can break it.
So, as the memories grew, the love grew too,
And the bag became stronger and stronger.
Now no words are spoken as these two people sit with bags by their sides,
Not in silence because of discomfort, or anger, or fear.
But because, through the years, they have come to know,
That love isn’t about those three small words,
Or grand gestures of affection.
Instead, love is what’s contained within those bags,
That others may not even notice as they walk by,
But that both of them know are there.
As they sit, silently, but together, watching the world go by.

{There is SO a Frank lyric in there - sorry Frank.}

This was probably the hardest brief I've ever had, as I don't go in for all that roses and chocolate crap but it's their bloody wedding day. I love *love* but am so stupidly laid back when it comes to romance this was really tricky. I hope it's captured the longevity of love, a more sincere form of love I guess. Well, I hope so anyway.

Sharing this is stupidly scary. Anyway... There it is!

Absolutely beautiful, thanks for sharing with us!

It will be our 25th Wedding Anniversay this year and I can definately relate to the words that you have put together

I'm sure they will both be proud :)

I am with you SB with the romance side, I see most of it as sidelines and distractions from what is or isn't really happening. Its why I consider Fairytale of New York one of the most romantic songs, no frills just two people who have built their lives around each other and want it to be that way, despite the hard times and the drunk times.
Soo with that in mind I think you have conveyed what love can be really quite well.

Thank you for the kind words. I keep fiddling with it, so it will probably look nothing like this come the wedding day...

One of my contributions to a friends wedding - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9ZT1kfDBrc

I also put together a band for the evening which was fun but annoyingly no video evidence of that has appeared.

SB - I realise this was 3 years ago now, but after reading this I feel compelled to know more about this reading, it is so beautifully worded and evokes so much emotion without being too mushy (technical term there!) Did you make many changes to it before delivering it as a reading? What was the reaction? I think I'd have this framed! Have you had many requests to use this at other weddings? So so many questions, it's been so long since I've read something that has really stayed with me, how wonderful it must be to be able to write like this!

I actually came on the forum for advice about my own wedding in April. We really want to incorporate our shared love for Frank into our ceremony and as we have a violinist we don't need to worry about any potentially inappropriate lyrics, but I'm struggling to imagine any songs played on a violin. I want something that sounds uplifting and possibly starts slow and builds up to more dramatic, but will still sound like a Frank song - if that makes any sense?!

Our current favourites are 'To take you home', 'Glorious you' and "Love, ire and song' - but I'm not sure if I am getting too bogged down on the singing rather than the music. Would love to find more instrumentals but have struggled so far!

Any suggestions/advice are so very welcome :)
