A Great Alt/Country Band: The Bottle Rockets

Frank has mentioned that he's been listening to a lot of country music lately. At his recent New Hampshire show, I asked him if he knew of The Bottle Rockets. He didn't...but he should. A label such as "Alt/Country" has its limitations but in this case it gives a reasonable approximation of how this band sounds. This links to 10 of their best songs:

My personal favorites are Indianapolis, Welfare Music, I'll Be Comin' Around, and Gravity Fails. This band rocks with authority and offers really smart, heartfelt story songs. Sort of like someone we all know. If any of these tunes work for you, check out Amazon marketplace as their best albums (The Brooklyn Side and 24 Hours A Day) can usually be had for just a few dollars.

A great on-line music resource that I heartily recommend comes from music critic, Robert Christgau. Here are his shorthand reviews of the band.

I forgot all about them, but your post brought it back to me.
They sure are a great band. I used to listen to Brand New Year a lot. Might still be one of my favourite albums out there.
So I agree with you, they are definitly worth checking out. Thanks for the reminder, I guess I will be me some more of their albums.

Glad to jog your memory, but truth be told, Brand New Year is one of my least favorite Bottle Rockets' albums. Still, it contains their magnificent ode to the reluctance most of us feel getting up in the AM. "Gotta Get Up", is a Ramonesesque song that sleep aficionados everywhere can embrace! :)

Well, I think for me it is about the memories. We used to blast it at 3 in the morning while closing down and cleaning up a bar. And shouting 'oh my God the Bar's on fire' while getting drunk and bartending. Oh the memories (and sometimes lack thereoff).
I really enjoyed that album, but of course tastes vary and are nothing to fight about.
Cheers

This just in: a Bottle Rockets documentary has just been released on-line. It's a nice blend of music and memories. I hope it can be viewed outside the USA. Enjoy (if you can)!
