What Music Did You First Buy with your Own Money?

I was such a loner. My mom was worried. She felt I needed to connect with music. She hauled me to a record store and we couldn't leave until I left with an album. I chose "The Eagles Live". Not a bad choice in retrospect. However, the first thing I bought with my own cash was a Kay-Tel compilation disc. "The Rock Album". http://www.allmusic.com/album/rock-albu ... 0000028485

I just found it in mint condition at a second-hand store. Gee, I must hook the old LP player to the speakers, huh?

"The best of Abba" - the reissue that included "Fernando"; a compilation of their first three albums. Bought at Winkelcentrum Presikhaaf in Arnhem…..

Simon and Garfunkle's Bridge Over Troubled Water. It was 1970 (I was 12) but my parents wouldn't buy it because of the lyrics to the song Cecilia. So my older sistet's boyfriend took my birthday/babysitting money and bought it for me. Not sure I enjoyed it; I was a nervous wreck they would find it.

Are Friends Electric by Tubeway Army, bought the single when I was visiting my cousins in London (in those pre-Ryanair/internet days, going from Dublin to London was a big deal!). As far as I know the record is still in the house somewhere....

Placebo - Soulmates Never Die and Absolution by Muse. I bought loads of stuff before that but these were the first CD's I bought with money I had earned.

Probably a Boyzone single, maybe 'Isn't It A Wonder'

I have no idea what the first thing I would have bought with money I earned was, but if allowance or birthday/Christmas money counts, probably my Beatles cassettes. I know I had (because I still have) the red and blue albums, but think I had a couple before that ... maybe Early Beatles and Meet The Beatles. Pretty sure Yellow Submarine was my first CD. I listened to my dad's Pink Floyd a lot and some of my mom's folk, but those Beatles ones were the first that I picked out on my own.

Bobby Sherman -- does that date me?

I think the second was Saturday Night Live soundtrack. That was expensive - two LPs.

Wow. Bobby Sherman. For my wife's birthday party I took all her friends' 12th birthdays and bought them a Tiger Beat from about that time. One woman had Bobby on the cover.

The Monkees first album, called, coincidentally, and unimaginatively, The Monkees. And it's not half-bad. Mike Nesmith could write and play!

It is a great album, but to be fair, Nesmith only wrote one song on there (Papa Gene Blues), and co-wrote another (which I can't remember the title of).
