Thoughts about the 2015 concerts setlist

Post by SusanneD » Sat Jan 31, 2015 9:21 pm

As the tour for the new album looming on the horizon in 2015, I'm wondering what songs from Tape Deck Heart (and the previous albums of course) would you love/hate to see getting bumped for the new stuff? I've only know Frank's music (going to his shows etc) for 18 months or so, so this is my first time I have to come to terms with major changes in the setlist :D I admit I'm glad I don't have to be in charge of the new setlist, because there are so many songs I love and would hate to not hear at future gigs. On the other hand... who knows (well some people already do) what gems the new album has in store for us...

Anyway, from TDH I think "Four Simple Words" is a given, I also hope he'll keep "Recovery" and "Plain Sailing Weather". Or "Losing Days"? So difficult to choose from. In regards to songs he usually plays from the previous albums there's actually just "Peggy Sang the Blues" and maybe "Wessex Boy" that I could most easily let go off. All the other classics I think I'm really going to miss. But I guess, that's just life. Necessary change and all...

Difficult one! I think the EKMB tracks are the ones I've heard live the most so all of them can go for the next tour as far as I'm concerned. Would love to see Four Simple Words reinstated to being the first song, it's such an amazing opener and really gets things going. Can't wait to hear all the new songs live regardless of how the set changes, and you can always reply on Frank to throw in some old surprises which is why we all keep going back to shows time after time I guess.

From TDH, I have to have Plainsailing Weather. It is just too perfect a song. Recovery will always be around. Losing Days and The Way I Tend To Be are, I think, headed for regular rotation.

Of the others, I'd most want to hold onto Fisher King Blues, though there are times, if I am with friends, when Polaroid Picture is a real timely piece. For me, Fisher King's build up just makes for a great sing along. I am also really fond of Good and Gone...

So, I'd hate to see anything happen to Plainsailing Weather and Losing Days. I think Recovery and The Way I Tend to Be are untouchable.

If I could fight for more, it'd be Fisher King Blues and Polaroid Picture.

I would not miss Oh Brother or Broken Piano. Or, for that matter, 4 Simple Words, which was great fun at first, but doesn't have the staying power for me that other songs might.

My perfect realistic (time and pace) setlist before another album starts goes like this:
Prufrock, Live Fast, Die Old, The Road, One Foot Before the Other, Plainsailing Weather, I Am Disappeared, Nashville, Tennessee, Love Ire & Song, If I Ever Stray, Recovery, The Way I Tend to Be, Losing Days, Polaroid Picture, Fisher King Blues, Try This at Home, Jet Lag, Substitute, Heartless Bastard Motherfucker (cause it is fun), Long Live the Queen, Photosynthesis
(encore) Reasons Not To Be an Idiot, Dan's Song
(2nd encore) Ballad of Me and My Friends, I Still Believe

I've been pondering this. Tough question to answer. Right now I just want a bunch of shows to go to, and he can play whatever he wants. And I definitely want to hear the new stuff, and the old stuff. Everything really. But he's got so many "I want to hear it every show" songs that the set length would need to increase to accommodate new stuff, so something has to go.

Recovery, The Way I Tend to Be and Plain Sailing Weather were staples on the TDH tour. They need a rest. Four Simple Words is a keeper -- an every show for the rest of eternity song. Bonus tracks We Shall Not Overcome and Time Machine didn't get as much play as they deserved on the TDH tour. They need to come out more.

I reckon Recovery, TWITTB and Four Simple Words will be in pretty much every setlist for the foreseeable future, and Plain Sailing Weather probably will too. I agree it'd be nice if We Shall Not Overcome were included more often - it's one of my favourites from that era and I've yet to hear it live.

I don't think anything will dramatically change as the set list is already soundly structured. I'd love to see the set list get a little slower towards the end, with an explosion when the band come in for Four Simple Words at the end. I'd love to see how Live Fast Die Young would do as a closing song, though! I'm no really thinking of any songs I'd like to drop, although I'd love for Cowboy Chords, Hold Your Tongue, Balthazar, Impersario and Sea Legs make more appearances, I can dream can't I? :D

I also think Recovery, Four Simple Words and The Way I Tend to Be will be the Tape Deck Heart songs that will have a solid place in every setlist from now on. Plain Sailing Weather will probably be the I Am Disappeared of this album, meaning it's a fan favorite but won't be played at every festival. That song, plus Polaroid Picture and Losing Days will probably be in heavy rotation at the headline shows though.

Regarding the older songs: I could imagine Reasons Not to Be an Idiot go, unfortunately. I couldn't imagine Photosynthesis or Long Live the Queen ever leaving, so if a song from Love Ire & Song has to make way for the new songs, it's probably that one.

From the England Keep My Bones songs, Glory Hallelujah is the one I suspect leaving the most. Maaaybe Peggy Sang the Blues.

Of course the perfect situation would be Frank pulling a Stringsteen and playing really really long sets. I would love every second of it! I wouldn't want to risk Frank getting a tour burnout though (if that is even possible with this guy).

I've never heard We shall not overcome or Time Machine live, but it would be amazing to hear them at the RAH, Totally agree with the Springsteen comparison why bother with support acts, why not just have Turner on all night with a small intermission each hour so we could all have a toilet /drink /cigarette break.

I mean that seems logical, but so many bands I now love I've discovered due to them supporting Frank. I'd enjoy a longer sets of course but it'd be a shame for us and the non-existent support band to lose out on all the exposure. Besides, I'm not sure Frank would be up for ditching the idea of support acts considering the reason he takes many of them with him on tour in the first place is because he actively likes them and wants to show their music to other people.

This. It also has to be said that I find Springsteen's mania for set length really lame. I don't want to see anyone play for more than about 2.5 hours, and that's pushing it for me. When he goes on for 4, yuck. Not for me. Leave em wanting more.
Shows? All of em.

Too true. While this could betray my slightly OCD nature, I just might have a list of 'Songs I've yet to hear live' and secretly enjoy gradually crossing them off at each gig I go to. Hearing them all in one fell swoop would make this game much less fun.

And my iTunes would be a much sorrier place if not for some of supports I've been introduced to over the years. Any miserable day is instantly made better by recalling the Koo Koo Kangaroo experience (to the extent that their music helped me to get through surgery without anaesthetic, but that's a story for a whole different thread, I suspect . . .)

I'd rather like to see a show which has all 12? tracks off the new LP with some one stuff around the edges ... maybe no solo bit in the middle and just the band rocking out for 1.5hrs

I don't think Recovery, Plain Sailing Weather, The Way I Tend to Be and Four Simple Words will be dropped. Peggy Sang the Blues I wouldn't necessarily miss (love the song, don't get me wrong though). The new songs are gonna be incredible though; Out of Breath, Get Better and Love 40 Down are going to be massive.
