Frank's guitar sound

Post by SonsofLibertyLI » Fri Aug 30, 2013 6:38 pm

Hello, I was wondering if anybody had any input on how he gets his acoustic guitar to sound the way it does. I have an old nylon string acoustic with no pickups, I also use a new/used electric Fender Squiere I picked up at a pawn shop while following him on the road. I've been fiddling with what pickups to use and the tone knobs on the guitar and various setting on the amp, but I can't quite get that hollow yet full sound. Look up a video of an acoustic version of I am disappeared or something where he plays popular full band song like the road, or try this at home as an solo acoustic version and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I noticed in a few places where he develops this kind of sound by not only using HIS guitar, and having the tones set the way he like them, but actually playing chords a little differently. So far I've seen this in I am Disappeared and in I Knew Prufrock Before he was Famous. If you notice, every chord in I am Disappeared he has his 4th finger playing a G on the third fret. This note is heard on every strum of every chord throughout the entire song until the final loop. In Prufrock, it's the open E string. This overlooked feature is adding so much depth to the sound of the song as a whole.

But I'm more interested in amp setting; bass, mid, treble, tone, etc. and adjustments I can do on the electric guitar. Someday I'll have an acoustic guitar with some settings on it.

getting that 'sound' on an acoustic is probably much more to do with the strings than anything else.

i've never been able to match an acoustic sound on an electric guitar ... at a guess (looking at franks wardrobe) he uses Ernie Balls - medium gauge ?

you will find it near impossible to make your strat sound like an acoustic guitar.

using ernie ball strings on your start won't help either.

my advice would be to buy an acoustic guitar. and unless you buy frank's guitar it's not going to sound the same.

and scroll the end of the page of this interview for his set up as of March 2012 (so it might have changed)

My gear is pretty minimal. I play Patrick James Eggle acoustic guitars (Saluda cutaway body) with Ernie Ball strings. I use a Fishman Rare Earth pickup running straight into a Radial DI, via a TC Electronic tuner. I also use Dunlop nylon picks (.73's please!). That's about it for me.)
