Would like a FT song as a first wedding dance

Frank,

My fiancee and I are big fans, and we're considering having our first dance at our wedding in October be "The Way I Tend To Be". I'm not sure what the meaning is behind the song, but to us, it means that we help each other past our weaknesses and hang-ups and bring out the best in each other. We're not sure if our band will be willing to learn it yet, but could you warn me if the song is actually about something horrible like infidelity or death or something? I don't need a deep analysis, but it would be helpful to know if we're way off the mark in our own interpretation. Excited to see you in Chicago on 10/6!

Thanks,
Brad

It's about koalas. You're fine.

"I don't like to get too specific about lyrics. It places limitations on them, and spoils the listeners' interpretation."

In all seriousness, obviously the song appears on Tape Deck Heart which is about a messy breakup and does allude once or twice to infidelity. However, in Frank's book he says the song was written around the time of England Keep My Bones, meaning it probably doesn't relate to the same situations as the other, later songs on TDH. Ultimately it's about what the song means to you, the listener, and whether you feel comfortable using it.

In my opinion I think you kinda just answered your own question. If it means that to you and your fiance then it means that to you guys. At least in my opinion. I for an example put myself in every of my favorite song and most of the time dont even care/want to know what the guy/girl really meant in that song. No offence to them of course (or especially to you Frank 8) )...

When me and my wife got married back in June we had The way I tend to be (the acoustic version from 3rd 3 years) as our first dance song then into 4 simple words to get people onto the dance floor. We also had Hits & Mrs playing while we signed the wedding register. Our top table was the Frank Turner stage and on the invitations our arty friend/head bridesmaid designed a stamp with the lyrics 'life is about love, last minutes and lost evenings'

That is seriously awesome! My wedding pre-dated knowing/loving Frank's music but if I was getting wed now, we'd totally have it in the mix. Congrats on your marriage!

You can get a slightly more detailed answer to this by reading Frank's book _The Road Beneath My Feet_. I'm not telling what page, because the whole thing is damn good and you should all read it.

That said, if you've created your own positive meaning from it, then who's to say you shouldn't use it for your wedding?

This thread begs the question what would you have as your 1st wedding dance Frank, later this year?
