Music Press
Hi Frank
I was wondering if you could suggest any music sites/magazines? I suppose it's pretty simple for you to keep up with music you like; just listen to bands you tour with! But it's not so easy for mere mortals.
The only sites I tend to look at are NME and Pitchfork and neither particularly light my fire. The NME are like that kid in school who's trying too hard to be cool (which, admittedly, was me) and everything that they review is deemed to be worthy of a 7/10, never more or less. Pitchfork seem like a bunch of snobbish arseholes who don't know how to have fun.
If you did have any advice I'd really appreciate it.
Joe

Re: Music Press
I've addressed this to Frank but suggestions from anyone are welcome, anything to get me away from the hilarity of Brandon Flowers' new album being given 7/10!

I tend to discover new music by investigating record labels (this obviously only works with independent labels). For starters, I have very little respect for anyone else's opinion, so music press doesn't sway me. But The Ruckus is great.
Beverley, Birmingham, Blackheath, Boston, Cheltenham, Dublin, Donington, Guildford, Hatfield, Hoboken, Knebworth, Latitude, Leamington Spa, London, Manchester, New York, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading, Sayreville, Sheffield, Southend, Wembley, Wolverhampton.

I have been buying Songlines for about ten years now. It always includes a CD. Have discovered lots of music through them.

Re: Music Press
Slight tangent here but an interesting piece this week by David Byrne in the New Statesman about how we choose art got me thinking about my music choices.

Re: Music Press
If you're after just new music, I have the following in my twitter feed. This serves as a daily sprinkling of old and new acts. Twitter is great as whoever is posting it (generally) has to be concise about why it's good, so you get a better feel for if it's worth your time.
Vulture
Paste Magazine
Stereogum
Aquarium Drunkard
Billboard
NME
Spin
Noisey
AV Club
In addition, I follow labels, festivals and bands I like. This combines with review sites to mean that if a release comes up that I might like, I tend to see it a lot in amongst all the chatter.
I'm not a fan of review sites. My tastes are pretty Catholic, and I like what I like.
