You seem to have a lot of (rather strong) opinions on certain bands, I was wondering what your view was on The Cure/ The Smiths? (sorry you probably get bored by the amount of asks like these, I'm not asking you to verify them for me, I like their music and I'll continue to, it's pure curiosity)

I like the cure, tho I'm not a super fan. The smiths have their moments. Morrissey's voice always slightly annoyed me. And the joke he's now become is off putting.
Shows? All of em.

I went to the same school as Robert smith and the feeling.

Not interesting but thought I'd share that.

IMHO Morrissey,s the best songwriter ever to come from these shores. With Mr Turner catching up quickly in a very small group quite far behind.

*Lyricist. He doesn't really write music, so he isn't a songwriter in my opinion. I love Morrissey, but let's not get confused...he is not a musician. He writes songs with other people as he is incapable of doing it by himself.

Ok you might be right,I just thought the fact that he writes the lyrics makes him a songwriter. But hey maybe he,s just a great lyricist. Here comes Frank with a wet sail flying up the rail to take the top prize, well done.

haha no that is cool! as for frank's response, I agree on the Morrissey front, I can't say I agree with a lot of the things he does but that doesn't put me off The Smiths' music

I am probably splitting hairs, but I think that as a solo artist that perhaps he unfairly gets all the credit when he cannot play a note. I have no doubt he has a huge creative influence over the construction of arrangement of the songs, but without other people to help him they would never get past him humming it in his head.

And the reason i feel like that is because there are plenty of solo artists who do write it all themselves, and therefore they deserve to be acknowledged for that achievement.

Fair point, and been a hairy arsed yokel who only listens and has no musical grasp I`m unfortunately going to have to agree with you.

not saying this is exactly what Morrissey does but I don't really think you have to be able to play the instruments to be able to write the parts or even the whole song. Like there's a ton of people who write songs for pop stars that can't actually sing them and composers who can write music on a ton of different instruments even if they can't play them.

I know Nate Ruess from fun. basically conceives entire songs in his head with strings and guitar parts and piano and everything and he can't play anything at all, I don't think that makes him any less of a songwriter than a guy with a guitar. Same goes for Morrissey, I would absolutely say he's one of the best songwriters ever, if just for his work with The Smiths. You're entitled to your opinion of course, just thought I'd share mine, ha.

Johnny Marr wrote all of the music for The Smiths, though - Morrissey's only musical contribution were vocal melodies. Not sure if he has more of an input his his solo work, but I imagine it's a similar arrangement.

(I love Morrissey, incidentally.)

Bands get discussed on this forum all the time but nothing seems to get people's goat as the mention of Morrissey (although Metallica didn't fare too well either).
I'm a fan. Love his voice. Elvis didn't write songs….
The Smiths are the one band I regret never seeing live when I had the chance.

I feel that Morrissey sometimes gets more stick than he deserves. I mean he's completely and utterly bonkers, but so are a lot of singers. I think the media love to grab a bonkers Morrissey quote and run with it more than they would with others.

Maybe his Autobiography made me biased towards him... I dunno.

I think he uses the media shamelessly. He did some amazing stuff in his time but he's generally a bit of a prat these days.

Morrissey dropped by his record company today. He really needs to keep his opinions to himself and concentrate on his music, which I really like. His recent comments about Jamie Oliver kinda pissed me off. Oliver has done some great things here in the US in the area of making school lunches more nutritious. I understand you're a vegetarian, Morrissey, and that's fine. But you can't tell the rest of us what to eat. So piss off.
