Maria McKee?

Post by greezy » Sun Mar 09, 2014 9:57 am

Any fans? I finally got around to getting her "Live at the BBC" album. Fierce piece of music. I'm not sure what happened to her.
Relax. This won't hurt.

With the risk of sounding like I jump on anything mentioned here, yes, I am a big fan. Have been following her since the first Lone Justice album.
Always go to see Maria when she comes to Ireland, though this has become less frequent and the band has shrunk. Last time was a duo show. It was great all the same, and she did a fantastic cover of "Backstreets".
"Life is sweet" is my favourite album. It's complicated and wonderful.
She got married and her husband is a filmmaker. The latest film they did together ("After the triumph of your birth") got good reviews, but I haven't seen it.

Awesome to even get a reply to this thread! I was lucky to see LJ open for U2 in a little hockey arena. (U2's manager got thrown in jail for the "Come On Down" stuff. My wife is STILL jealous that I went and she didn't.) She was the It Girl after her first solo album came out and then she totally Missing In Action here in the States from then on. Saw her in a DC bar...My friend tried to give her a flower from his garden. She wouldn't accept it. Strange. Yes, I'm an old punk from old DC. I love how she ventured into Glitter. Scarlover is certainly one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time. I heard that she lives in Ireland. I hope she is doing well. Frustrating how someone can make such a big impression on my musical life and then disappear. Well, Bessie Smith did that but with good reason. :D
Relax. This won't hurt.

We seem to be the only fans here, Greezy, so I guess this should be moved to the 'Music' forum.
Maria didn't exactly disappear (six solo albums plus two live albums) but compared to the level of fame at Lone Justice time she certainly went low key.
She did live in Dublin at some point, but she lives in L.A. now. She is on Twitter (@realmariamckee).
There is a thread on Springsteen forum BTX (http://www.backstreets.com) about Maria & Lone Justice - in sub forum 'Where the bands are'. One guy in particular who posts there has a lot of knowledge. Apparently both Maria and her half brother Bryan MacLean (of the 60's band Love) are/were bi-polar. When I read that the lyrics of "Carried" suddenly made sense to me.
This is her cover of "Backstreets" (audio only). I think this is fantastic..

Awesome. You are the Maria Ency-clo-pidia. Great song version. I see it's from a live album that I don't own yet.

Seems Maria is coming out of retirement. Only one show announced and it is in Dublin! Bought ticket instantly.

Awesome! I hope it's an epic show. I'll hope against hope for a show at the 9:30.

Speaking of Dublin, I found my exact name scratched in the walls of Kilmainham Gaol. Wow.
