i guess it all depends on where you live. generally - get yourself known by playing gigs, hassling promoters, contacting other acts who tour your town and asking if they have any support slots, record a GOOD demo, it goes on ....

And get good with banter. The audience will remember the act better if they aren't just talented, but also are comfortable and a little interactive. It's what sets a great, memorable act from a good one.

Have a good back story, schmooze and build hype, only tell your truth to a select few and entertain the rest (but be consistent with it), write good songs, have a big head (anatomically and egotistically) and play many, many, useful shows, and don't take advice from me.

Open mic nights are a good place to start, the more you do the more people you meet. Plus the added bonus that the venue is more likely to give you a gig if you've been to a few of their open mics. I know a number of local places who will only book acts if they've played there at an open mic and you stood out enough (obviously in a good way) they'll give you a gig.
