Matt Ridley - Really?

Post by MikeRoberts » Wed Nov 06, 2013 3:33 am

I was trawling around the Net trying to find out if Frank had done any songs that particularly address environmental degradation, including climate change, as this, it seems to me, is the most crucial issue around, given that the environment underpins everything and the news just doesn't seem to get better. I've often felt songs can get to the heart of the matter when boring scientific research papers can't.

In my trawl, I found a transcript of an interview in which Frank seemed to endorse Mat Ridley (the self styled "rational optimist"). Sure enough, the forum also contained a recommendation of Ridley, from Frank.

"Really?", I thought. Does Frank really like Matt Ridley's ideas on our environmental woes? Matt, from what I can tell, is a climate change misinformer and can only see human ingenuity as infinite and able to solve any problem that it faces, without any drastic changes. Progress (whatever that means) is continuous and will go on forever (despite the fact that all previous societies have failed, often through environmental or resource problems).

Did I miss something? Does Frank really recommend this guy to others? If so, I would not have guessed it from the songs I've heard from Frank. Still Ridley has written fairly neutral science based books in the past, so maybe they are what Frank is recommending.

This sounds like the most boring idea for a song ever.

Besides, what would rhyme with environmental degradation?

I don't really recall Frank ever claiming to be an activist of any sort. He doesn't have any songs about not kicking puppies that I can recall either. You don't have to agree with everything about him to enjoy his music. If I got uptight about every artist I disagreed with from time to time I'm sure there would be nothing left to listen to. Really, dude?

Sunshine, there's a line in an Ani Difranco song that says "why don't we just go ahead and turn off the Sun, because we'll never live long enough to undo everything we've done to you". Kind of ode to our mother. It's really beautiful. That's probably more the kind of thing he means, rather than actually trying to rhyme environmental degradation. Fun party game though! (Uh, no)

Frank does not believe in global warming and uses Styrofoam whenever possible. It is what "The Way I Tend To Be" is about.

Never shuts up about him. You can't go five minutes without him starting on a diatribe about Ridley, to be honest. I once managed to get 30 seconds into a conversation with him about music and he still managed to steer the conversation back to fucking Ridley again. I'm totally sick of hearing about him. I can't even stomach talking about that concept triple-disc CD he released: 45 Odes to Matt Ridley - utter bilge, almost bankrupted Xtra Mile when they tried to put that nonsense out. They had to give it away for free at shows for months just to get rid of the massive stockpile they were holding at PIAS. I'm using four of them as coasters.
