i've not listened to it for years ... and may actually do so over the weekend - i just remember when it came out feeling really let down by it ... but for me kid a was part of a 'moment' and would always be hard to follow up ...

That was Use Your Illusion, and IIRC half of the 'part 2' album was 10 minute long fillers.

I would say Pink Floyd's The Wall was perfect as a double album. It had a narrative that needed the length, in my opinion. I'm not sure if it really counts in this conversation since it's a concept thing, but it's on two discs so I think of it as a double album.

I fully expect to be scoffed at, but as a double album, I think "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" really worked. Only 17 songs, but my favorites were the lesser known cuts. And personally, it was a huge act of defiance for me as a 15 year old (sigh) to sneak it into the house. My conservative parents hated the line "fight our parents out in the street...." Haha.

I think Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a great album! In fact I think it is EJ'S only good album

The only really good double album I can think of is 'London Calling'-The Clash. Although admittedly I could probably happily drop a few songs off that album and it could still be just as good.

you mean Use Your Illusions Pts 1 & 2 - as perfect an exampla as I can think of, there's probably just about the makings of a single good album amongst all the shite on those two discs

I think with Guns N Roses a lot of the dislike people have for them is more focused on Axl Rose as oppose to the band as a whole, personally I think he fucking ruined what could have been one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Appetite For Destruction is an absolute killer album, after that it's just a handful of tunes..............

Bruce's "The promise" would defenitely have been better as a single album.
I don't know what I would leave off "The river" though... (okay, "I'm a rocker").

"Exile on Main Street" is a good one too.

I'm enjoying this thread. ;)

I re-listened to amnesiac again today and its better than I last remember but still one of the weakest radiohead albums.

As a new thought - what about album 'sequels' ?

The only one I can think of is meatloaf and 'bat out of hell' 1 2 and 3.

Why do that?

Why stop at just a double?

But yeah I agree that pretty much every double album would be improved by trimming it a bit.

I believe that as Bat Out of Hell was so popular and Meatloaf's subsequent work had not sold as well it was was used as a way to increase sales when releasing 2. Also I think that the trilogy is the trilogy of Meatloaf albums written entirely by Jim Steinman
