Counting Crows advice!

Hey Frank

Just wondering if you/the guys on here can point me in a musical direction.

I recently started listening to August and Everything after, and it blew my mind. I read somewhere that you cited yourself as a Counting Crows fan (first record in partic), and was just wondering, where in their back catalogue is best to explore next after their debut do you think??

I'm looking for songs in the same vein as Anna Begins, as that track to me is a masterpiece.

Thanks

Speaking of The Counting Crows, they're also playing London the day Tape Deck Heart is released. Frank's gig schedule is free that night so i think he'll be supporting them but he's just forgot to tell us haven't you Frank?

Ha! Not supporting them but I'm hoping I might be able to make the show.

August is a masterpiece, as is "This Desert Life". The second record is very good, but not quite up to the standard of 1 and 3 in my opinion. After that I feel they've slightly lost their way, though every album has some good songs.

August is such a milestone record for me, possibly the most important one.

Just bought This Desert Life. After listening through Mrs Potter's Lullaby, I can conclude that your perceptions were spot on! So cheers!

I'd also suggest that after listening to album 1 through 3 that you listen to some of their live albums. What Counting Crows do better than any other band is the art of song arrangement. They just completely reinterpret their songs live and it's brilliant. It does mean that if you see them live, you'll never be quite sure what version of the song you're going to get, and that can be a bit annoying for some who only want to hear the studio versions, but they just do it so well that it's amazing.

Enjoy!

Just to add, I saw them last month here in Anaheim and they were stellar.
One of the best live acts I saw last year..."Long December" and "Rain King" both just floored me.

Here's the setlist:
Le Ballet d’Or / Mr. Jones / Untitled (Love Song) (The Romany Rye cover) / Recovering the Satellites / Colorblind / Mercy (Tender Mercies cover) / A Long December / Start Again (Teenage Fanclub cover) > Miami > Round Here > Mercury / Return of the Grievous Angel (Gram Parsons cover) / You Ain’t Going Nowhere (Bob Dylan cover) / Rain King (with bits of Elbow’s Lippy Kids)

Encore: Friend of the Devil (Grateful Dead cover) > Hanginaround / Holiday in Spain

And a local review if you'd like to read it:

August has always been my "if you were stuck on a desert island and could only have one album with you" album. I can't get enough of it, that was before I discovered Frank, I might have to rethink my one choice.
