'Folk' music and what it means

Interesting piece here about 'Folk' music http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicbl ... -prof-folk but I don't feel it totally answers the question about what 'Folk' is.

As much as I *enjoy* Mumford & Sons (and will take all abuse to be hurled at me for that admission as I'm sure I'll get some...) - I wouldn't put them anywhere near FT in my musical continuum, yet FT uses the term 'folk-punk' and M&S are about the only act anyone agrees on when defining what the genre means.

I'd be interested to hear Frank's opinion, and maybe even on the article if the comments are still open.
The only thing left to do is get another round in at the bar
