Writer's block

Post by smige2 » Sun Oct 02, 2011 4:55 pm

You seem to be writing songs constantly, but have you ever suffered from writer's block? Do you have any tips on overcoming it?

Before you became a recognised artist, did you ever worry that what you were writing wasn't good enough?

uh sure, i get block occasionally, but thankfully (touch wood etc.) it hasn't lasted for too long for me so far, and right now i can be a little more liesurely in terms of song-writing if i need to be (that, incidentally, that i am being).

and i still constantly worry that my writing isn't good enough, all day every day.

Cheers for the reply. I guess it's good to be in the position to be leisurely with songwriting - the worst thing would to be obliged to produce music and to have to try to force it.

Quite surprised by the second part of your answer, but it does make me feel better about my own musical insecurities. I suppose nearly all songwriters must feel that way.

i read an interview with Nick Cave once, a few years ago, in which he said that every time he makes an album he feels like he's scraping the bottom of the barrel. that made me feel a lot better.

frank, on an opposite note, have you ever written a song that instantly made you go 'fuck yeah, this is great'?
Listen, do you smell something?

I tend to get writers block for 2 -3 months at a time, it gets incredibly frustrating after a few weeks of that, basically forcing myself to write a song.

But when i come out of that block, i can come up with 3 - 4 completed ideas within a week or two.

uh, sort of, tho i'm not usually quite so confident. i write songs on my own so when they're done i often feel like i'm emerging from a bunker into the daylight, and it takes a while to accustomise and see what other people think.

You never have the 'eureka' moment, then? You must have felt some sense of self-satisfaction after having first penned songs like Love Ire & Song or I Am Disappeared?

uh, not that clearly. obviously i felt good about finishing the songs, but i also was worried about whether they were good or whether i was deluded.

I would have thought "I still believe" would have felt like an instant classic.

It is, IMHO.

Of late I've been in a block, but then out of nowhere I'd have a few days of constant writing..
I suppose I'm afraid of lyrics..

carry on.
EDIT - that makes no sense..

I meant i'm constantly in a block..

On the subject of songwriting - I listened to 'Balthazar, impressario' on my i-Pod going into work this morning. I hit repeat twice.
Perfect on a Monday morning: sad, beautiful, melancholic; makes you think about life and wondering if you are heading in the right direction. Some achievement writing that...
