I had never heard of the Standells. Both Bruce and Frank have covered their song "Dirty water".
Both seem to be winging it, successfully.

Best Bruce video ever. Born to run 1975-2012.
Goosebumps.

It will include 'Dream baby dream' (Suicide) and 'Just like fire would' (the Saints). Bruce hasn't released covers for a long time. These will be great.
What do you think of it? I got it on Monday, really enjoyed it on the first few listens!

I quite enjoy it. My only issue is some of the over indulgence in Tom Morello's guitars in certain places (specifically in 41 Shots)
crap at dancing and can't hold my drink...

Have been listening to 'High hopes' for 12 days now and, sorry to be predictable, I love it. It is not as good as 'Wrecking ball', but then I thought 'Wrecking ball' was his best album since 'Born in the U.S.A.'
I expected I would love 'Just like fire would' and 'Dream baby dream' and indeed I do. Of the songs that were new to me I like 'Hunter of the invisible game' best, followed by 'Down in the hole' (really like Patti Scialfa's vocals on that one) and 'Harry's place'.
The only song I am not gone on is 'Frankie fell in love'.
Much has been written about the fact that Bruce recorded some covers for the first time in ages and that he re-recorded two songs he released in very different versions before (God forbid). I guess people have forgotten that he released some great covers in the past ('Jersey girl', 'Trapped', 'War'), or perhaps the critics did not like them either. These were from before the internet, so we didn't read everybody's opinion…
I really like Tom Morello's contribution. I don't find him overpowering. Only on 'Tom Joad' does he pull out all the plugs, and I think it is a brilliant version.
I thought I preferred Ron Aniello's production to Brendan O'Brien's, but on this CD it is hard to tell them apart. I had to look at the credits to see who did what.
So that's my take on the album (Monty asked). Although financially it would be better if there was no tour this year, after seeing the performances on Jimmy Fallon I am now starting to hope there will be after all…

Like Frank, Bruce is into place-appropriate covers these days.
Here is a brilliant one from last night in Capetown (written by a man from Coventry though):

What would we all give to hear "Electric Nebraska"?
Relax. This won't hurt.

Well the electric/full-band versions they do of Atlantic City, Mansion On the Hill, Johnny 99, and Reason to Believe (Magic tour in particular), certainly kick ass. What I really want is a classic E Street Band version of Open All Night. I witnessed the Seeger-ized version on the last tour, and while it also kicked ass, it's not quite what my mind is looking for. And I can't quite say what it is that my mind is looking for -- just a full-band of the version he did on the Joad tour (in particular at the Freehold show, which I've listened to about 500 times)

I'd also love to hear the electric Nebraska they supposedly tried to cut in '82, which is what I'm sure you were asking :)

And to keep this "Ask Me" related....How about you, Frank? Thoughts on Electric Nebraska?

Anyone who knows me knows that my favourite bands are Springsteen and Mischief Brew.

Now, the two worlds collide.

One of the BitUSA's greatest tracks.

I like the Mischief Brew cover of "My hometown" posted above.

More regional covers from Bruce. I think this is a brilliant way to get an audience on your side. I like Frank's 'localized' versions of "Eulogy", but I thought the run of regional covers from the last U.S./Canada tour was better still.
Back to Bruce. If you have only time for one, check out "Stayin' alive". Very different. Great version!

Brisbane: "Stayin' alive" (Bee Gees cover)

Sydney: "Friday on my mind" (Easybeats cover)

Sydney: "Don't change" (InXS cover)

Auckland: "Royals" (Lorde cover)

Edited - replaced with better quality versions from Bruce's own website.

Not a regional cover, but Spill the Wine also deserves a mention. I love covers. It's a great way to get audience participation from the casuals and plus-ones who may not know all the material of who's up on stage. Pick a song that everyone knows, and you suddenly have even the bored people jumping out of their seats.
