Van the Man

Post by Watergirl » Fri Dec 09, 2016 10:29 pm

Hi Frank. I read the Intertainment Magazine interview today, in which you mention the Band on 'The last waltz', including Van Morrison. Was wondering if you are a fan of Van the Man?
Springsteen is quite a fan. You can hear that particularly on 'The wild. the innocent and the E Street shuffle'.

Ish. He's a little funkier than I usually go for but I've spent my time with Astral Weeks.
Shows? All of em.

Thanks. True about the funky-ness, or soul rather. I got into his music a long time ago and hence still like him a lot.
Not sure if I would be open to it if I discovered him now, which is a regrettable state of affairs really.

Talking of a little funkier. I'm sure I heard some Lionel Ritchie before you played last night. This made me rather happy.

Saw him in 2000ish when he played when he played a show here in the Isle of Man in TT week. Since the promoter was IOM Government, he made them keep the airport open so he didn't have to spend a night in the IOM!

Whilst the musicianship was excellent, the interaction with the crowd was literally zero, in fact the only words I heard him speak were to shout at the band (about tempo in one of the songs) "Speed it up - speed it up". Gotta get to that plane!

There used to be a item in Viz where people could write in and nominate 'Celebrity Cunts' - I think Van made the page more than once.

It is said that there are people who like him and people who have met him. I

It's that old question - is it necessary to like the musician in order to love the music.
I don't think so. It helps, but it is not a prerequisite.

Totally agree Watergirl.

There are tricky levels to this one though. I think if someone is a homophobe or a racist and shares those views in public then I would find it hard to listen to their music without being aware of it. If they are just a bit unpleasant in private then it's a different matter.

Totally agree, NickSouthampton.

It's peculiar to read the American Springsteen forum at the moment. Bruce has been coming out with mild and reasonable criticism of Trump and this really upsets the redneck section of his American audience. I cannot even get my head around this, but there you go.

I have this problem with reggae. Not that I am a huge fan anyway, but I would find it impossible to like musicians who are so publicly homophobic.

This thread has strayed off topic quite a bit....
