Jan. 2015 - solo show with Butch Walker - Los Angeles

Post by ToTheWest » Thu Jan 22, 2015 7:10 am

For anyone curious, a little report on Frank’s first show of 2015 last night (20 January) at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles—

It was billed as a band called “DTF” (go read the hints posted on Twitter if you haven’t already...funny stuff), which Frank later explained was not just because he was a sleazeball (my word, not his), but was meant to stand for “Disappoint The Fans.” That was a reference to how a lot of people probably got shut out of buying tickets due to the really small venue size and the last-minute announcement.

Frank’s current producer, Butch Walker, was the excellent opening act. I have to admit I didn’t know a thing about Walker’s music beforehand, but thought he was great. He started on piano and played the rest of the set on two different guitars (or three? Um, I was kind of tipsy.) His songs were poignant (yes, I just wrote “poignant”) and his voice stellar. I’m definitely a new fan and encourage you to check him out if you haven’t already. (If you’re more musically aware than I am, you might already know that he’s fairly popular in his own right.)

Anyway, Frank joked about how he was out of practice because it had been a month since he’d last played a show, but of course, he put on another great one. I absolutely love seeing him with the full band, but getting to see a solo show here and there is always a fantastic reminder of how the man can completely anchor the attention of a crowd with nothing but his voice and an acoustic guitar. Had a great time with my little family of FT diehards, and I'm so grateful we were able to get in. Here’s the set list:

Get Better [can’t get this song out of my head—can’t wait to hear the album version]
If Ever I Stray
Summer of ’89 (Butch Walker cover)
I Knew Prufrock…
Tattoos
Glorious You [about his cousin, whom he said had a tough year like he did]
The Way I Tend to Be
Josephine [can’t get this out of my head either!]
Peggy Sang the Blues
Heart of the Continent (John K. Samson cover)
Reasons Not to Be an Idiot
Plain Sailing Weather
Recovery [unfortunately, the jumping jacks/star jumps attempted by my friends and me did not catch on…boo]
Photosynthesis
I Still Believe (with Craig Jenkins on harmonica and Butch Walker on drums)

Let me know if you were there and I missed anything.

Final note: I used to try to film at least one new song per show and put them on YouTube, but stopped a couple years ago out of respect for Frank’s wishes. If you have the self-control to wait until the record comes out to hear the new songs, good for you. If not, they’re out there…

Lucky you!

Thanks for sharing this review. I should definitely check out Butch Walker's music, will do that tonight at home.

To catch Frank in a solo Show (with just his guitar and maybe a guest on a few songs) is on my bucket list :)

I was lucky to hear "Get Better" at a show last year and I absolutely freaking love it! Can't wait for all the other new songs on the new album.

I want him to play the set list he played at his first gig, which was on the same stage, and then I want him to play all the songs I want to hear in the order I want to hear them or I will not be happy.

And what about another show which has a set list in alphabetical order?

Joking aside: do you even remember what songs he played at that first gig?

It is all about me. The only reason he started any of this was an attempt to woo me with song. He had me living in his room within six months so clearly it worked.

I do remember what he played actually...well...not completely or in what order...there was a couple of Million Dead songs in there (A Song To Ruin definitely, Achilles Lung maybe), The Outdoor Type, Dancing Queen, maybe Sunshine State...perhaps The State Lottery...errrr...it was a short set and clearly I do NOT remember.

Hahaha...I have tried on a number of occasions over the years to influence his set list choice, but one thing I have learned is that he will not be influenced. You know, I might get the odd request in here and there, but for the most part if I ask for it, it's not getting played. And if I don't like it, he will surely wheel it out. For instance, there is not a shadow of doubt in my mind that he is going to play To Take You Home at 93 Feet East. All these people complaining he never plays it just need to go to a show that I am at, and it's a near guarantee.

...and just in case anyone thought different, my original post was a joke (and subsequent posts too for that matter).
