2014 Gigs

Post by reitzel6570 » Wed Dec 31, 2014 4:27 am

2014 is just about done, so I'm reviewing my gig-year. In 2013 I went to 23 shows, and 18 of them were Frank Turner. In 2012 I went to 29 shows, and 17 were that other dude I chase around, "He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named" (and 5 Frank Turner). I figured I would try to be a bit less obsessive in 2014, and also try to go to more local shows. Frank and that other dude not touring in the States much this year helped make that actually happen.

Total gig count: 49. How it played out listed below (some were co-headliners, at least to me, so it adds up to more than 49). 17 shows were within a 45 minute drive, which is as local as it gets for me since I'm not really near any major cities. And I only made a ridiculous 8 hour drive twice. The rest were within a 3.5 hour drive from my house.

So, what did you all get to see?

# of Gigs/Band
5 Against Me!

After a 2012 and 2013 that were heavily weighted toward certain bands, I was not less obsessive in 2014. I would have balanced the count out with more Frank if I could have, but alas, the schedules just didn't line up.
I saw 25 bands overall in 2014. Not bad, right? Eh, 22 of them were supports or non-headliners at festivals where I'd gone to see a headliner. Nonetheless, I did enjoy quite a lot of them and discover some new-to-me stuff. And as always, I have no regrets at all about seeing the same band a lot of times. Lots of fun and new places.
The closest show was in Delaware (Firefly Fest) which is actually where I live. This is insanely rare. I also did one show in Philly which is about as close. Farthest were Seattle and London ... I had to get on a plane for those. Farthest via road was Austin, Texas ... about 1,600 miles and 24-plus hours one way. I really cherished these travels ... they aren't going to be realistic at some point.

Breakdown of 2014 with # times seen and bands:

19 Arctic Monkeys
1 Frank Turner
1 Bastille

4 White Denim
3 The Orwells
2 Miles Kane
2 Royal Blood
2 Tame Impala
2 Mini Mansions
2 Deerhunter
2 The Districts
1 Kan Wakan
1 The Dead Men
1 Grizfolk

Non-headliners at festivals (one time each):
J Roddy Walston & The Business
30 Seconds To Mars
Death From Above 1979
Flow Tribe
Lauryn Hill (shortened set)
Iron and Wine
2011: 8/26, 28, 11/4(x2); 2012: 2/21, 22, 23, 24, 3/9, 11, 12, 18, 9/8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 28, 29, 30; 2013: 6/5, 6, 7(x2), 8, 7/26, 31, 8/1, 2, 10/4, 5, 11/16, 19, 29(X2). 2014: 6/4. 2015: 3/8, 9(x2), 5/12, 13, 14, 15. 18

Some favourite gigs from 2014:

Frank Turner - London O2
DakhaBrakha - Womad
The Waterboys - Paradiso Amsterdam
Robert Plant - Glastonbury
McGoldrick / McCusker / Doyle - Cambridge Folk Festival
Bellowhead - Temple Bar Trad Fest
The Gloaming - National Concert Hall
Richard Thompson - Womad
Sinéad O'Connor - Womad
Loudon Wainwright III - Cambridge Folk Festival

Hey Reitzel6570, it looks like He-who-shall-not….. will again not come to Europe in 2015. There would have been some news by now. More opportunities for other stuff in 2015 again so.

I'm gutted I didn't get to see Bellowhead this year. We had tickets but several months before the gig, the venue car park was on fire, which damaged the actual venue and they couldn't find a suitable replacement so the gig got cancelled.

2014 was pretty awesome, so I'm good with the same plan for 2015. I just need a lot more Turner & Souls in my life than just 5 measly shows.

I think it's more than likely that if I hadn't tuned in to Frank's livestream from Brooklyn April 28th, 2011 I wouldn't have been hooked & dragged into a new thing for me. Only 5 gigs that year to see FT in Kingston, Blissfields & Hammersmith plus Dylan/Knopfler and Bryan Ferry. I learnt that it was a long gap between Blissfields & Hammersmith and wished I'd booked to go to Bournemouth as well and that standing was way better than sitting. From the first gig in 2012, The Xcerts at The Borderline, I've got so many memories that I've more than made up for not doing this earlier in life. 2014 looked like this:

Chris T-T & The Hoodrats 2
Oxygen Thief 6
Deer Tick
George Frakes 2
FT & The Sleeping Souls 11, FT & Matt, FT solo
Flogging Molly 3
Beans on Toast 7
Sean McGowan + Sam Duckworth 2
Ben Marwood
J Roddy Walston & The Business
Tim OT + Ruby Day
Andrew Jackson Jihad 3
Ducking Punches/Dan Allen
Billy Lockett
Felix Hagan & The Family 2
The Smith Street Band 5
Restorations 2
Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo 2
Alkaline Trio + Bayside
Lucero + Sam Russo
Larry & His Flask + Crazy Arm
I Am The Avalanche
Pink Torpedo
Jason Isbell
Chuck Ragan
Northcote 2
Billy The Kid 5
Will Varley 3
Ollie Forrest aka Oliver Thompson plays guitar for Bryan Ferry
Mongol Horde + Palehorse 2
Stornoway + Crowns
The Xcerts
14 Carat Grapefruit
Solemn Sun
Koo Kanga Roo 5
The Menzingers 2
Joan Armatrading
Gaz Brookfield + Lonely Tourist + Joe McCorriston
Against Me!
Billy Bragg + The Horrors + Catfish & The Bottlemen + To Kill A King + Royal Blood

Mongol Horde
Solemn Sun
Future of the Left 3
John MOuse 4

Surely it'd be easier to list who you *didn't* see....

The last period of my life I had time to make lists like this was about ten years ago when I was only working part-time. But I've enjoyed scanning all your lists, and jealous of everyone who got to see Frank play more than once or twice last year.
Brevity is not my forte.

I can't even remember. Saw Frank in Edinburgh, with Beans and Flogging Molly. Saw You Me At Six at Nottingham Arena, which was a fab venue for queueing, supported by Young Kato. Saw Frank again at Live at Leeds, where I also saw some guy called Sam something, Young Kato, Royal Blood, missed Eliza and the Bear by the skin of our teeth, saw half of Norma Jean Martine's set, then Rae Morris then Frank. Saw our mates Acoustimosh/HD7/Dark Side of the Moor a few times, oo yeah one of them is The Dark Rasmurn Project, they had their first gig last year, which was very cool. I had bass envy.

This year will be more gig-heavy.

I am so showing my hubby this thread (thanks for the heads up Helentx). Then he'll understand how restrained I was by only going to 16 last year. :-)

Then again, as my limit was meant to be 1 a month, maybe I should keep quiet...

Mine are no where near as cool as some of your lists, but hey, I enjoyed them all:

Del Amitri
Frank x 3
All Time Low
Fall Out Boy
Band of Skulls x 2
Panic! At The Disco
Alex Clare
Tom Jones
Rewind Festival
Kids in Glass Houses
Justin Currie
Bryan Adams
Linkin Park (really sad to say, but I was mega excited when we bumped into McBusted whilst waiting for LP!!!)
