FEST 13 recommendations, anyone??

Post by darlenet. » Thu Jul 31, 2014 6:40 pm

Hey everyone,

Last year I got a few great recommendations for bands to see at FEST, (Thanks, Rubber Soul for PJ Bond and Mark McCabe). And since most folks here have a great and varied music taste, I would love any input you have especially with the UK bands. So if anyone is looking for something to waste their time on, I would love your advice. I have lots to see, but there are often conflicts due to simultaneous venues, so it would be great to have some as a backup plan too. Link to bands below.

Thanks so much! Darlene

Having just had a quick look I'd say don't miss Allison Weiss or Ducking Punches. Have fun.

Not quite UK but.....

Restorations
Signals Midwest
Dikembe - New LP is terrific.
The Hotelier - One of the best LP's this year.
Modern Baseball
Sidekicks
I would mention the Smith St Band but would assume you are aware.

It's a pretty cool lineup! I was going to make a list but realised it'd just be a list of bands that I know of, but haven't actually listened to, and therefore probably not helpful! I completely agree about Ducking Punches and definitely check out Helen Chambers if you can, one of my favourite singer/songwriters, she released her debut album 'Penny Arcade' recently and it's ace. I don't normally like female singers (and yes, I know that's a ridiculous statement to make, but it's like a mental block or something, I dunno) but Helen is awesome. Have a great time!

Thanks, guys! After checking your suggestions out, especially the ones unfamiliar to me, I will definitely add them to my list. I really like the Dikembe album!

Darlene,

As someone who you have talked to a few times, and we agree on many things, I will now give you my recommendations...(Also, I just saw this post)

As I go down the list, I'll try to link to songs, or videos too...

Allison Weiss (She is new to me, but I have fallen in love with her music) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_E0fe88pyA

Chuck Ragan (Some of these are going to be fairly obvious) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm42odzbHEE

Dave Hause (Again, obvious choices for people who know of the people Frank pals with) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzg60rawVp4

Hot Water Music (Chuck Ragan's punk band...A MUST see) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPVNKIqy_cw

The Maxies (Please, please, PLEASE go see them. They are friends of mine, and their merch girl is part of my FTHC family) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5xfw_1ncG8

The Menzingers (They tour with The Smith Street Band CONSTANTLY) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZscWmIizzw

MINERAL (If you have any questions about wether or not you should see them, email Frank) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3pVvykZnE0

Paul Collins Beat (Old school rock and roll. A great live musician) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rex3XKWuNE

THE SMITH STREET BAND - I'm not going to even dignify this with a link...Just do me a favor. If you run into their singer Wil, tell him to answer his fucking email, love Jeff.

There are a few other "Frank friends" as well...Franz Nicolay, Tim Barry...I just haven't listened to a lot of their stuff.

Hopefully this helps. Going through this, I realize how many good bands are there, and now I am way jealous.

Thanks, Jeff!

You've given me a few I haven't heard of, so that's good. I'm going to watch the live stream of Mineral tonight, so that will give me an idea of them. I don't remember them back in the day!

By the way, you will never regret coming to FEST. It is the best festival. Downtown Gainesville gets taken over by punks. It is nonstop partying. And a lot of the artists go to each other's shows, so you may find yourself next to anyone. And if you come, I can help with transportation, sightseeing, trips to the beer outlet, whatever.

Thank you very much!!!! I probably won't be able to make it to this year, but I will definitely keep this in mind!
