O2 - 12/02/2014 - Tubes

Post by balthazarapap » Thu Feb 06, 2014 10:28 pm

I'm struggling to figure out how to get from Paddington to North Greenwich around half 4 next Wednesday for the O2 gig. Is there anyone who can help me out? I rarely go to London and this is rather stressful. I also need to be able to get back after the gig as well...

Hope that the strike is called off. :D

It's difficult to say to be honest. Some trains have been running for the past couple of days so it may be the same. The best way by a mile is to download the citymapper app. It will calculate the best routes by tube, bus and train.

Not looking likely at this point. If my commute last week was anything to go by, you can try to use the limited tube services, but expect to have to wait for many trains to pass as you queue on platforms to board. If you try to use the buses bear in mind you will crawl around the city at a frustratingly slow pace. The river boats are often a good option, but last week they were under 20 to 25 times the normal levels of passengers, the queues were huge.

My commute typically took between 4 and 7 times as long on strike days. Don't expect a seat anywhere, be grateful if you actually get one. Bring a bottle of water (whichever means of transport you're on), some music or a book to try and keep the stress levels down, and allow huge amounts of time to get anywhere at all.

There's really no point asking anyone for advice in advance - the availability of travel services, and their performance and merits were varying throughout the day. What someone advises you today might be useless by Wednesday. Lines and stations were closing and opening without notice all the time. Bus routes were getting cancelled, cut short, or diverted. Follow the TfL twitter feeds on the day, or ask the staff who are working at stations on the strike days ("ambassadors") for advice.

I've just booked a parking space at O2.

Works out so much cheaper to drive than buying 2 train tickets. Also means I can have a nice warm drive home.

We decided to make a bit of a day of it, so getting there early and chilling about the queue to get out....
As for the tubes, fingers crossed that the talks scheduled for tomorrow get the strike suspended...and that BoJo stops being such a smug git.

Yeah. Smug fucker trying to improve our transport system whilst reducing the bloated cost of the only non-automated metro system in the world. Good job that hero of the people and general all round good egg bob crow is there to stand up for all those poor souls who have already been keen to signal that they'd be happy to take voluntary redundancy.

Anyone else going to be attempting to get the Jubilee line from Waterloo to and from the gig? Getting to the O2 shouldn't be too big an issue if you get there early enough to ensure you don't get screwed over by the strike (I aim to get into London for around 3ish I think), but I'm concerned about getting back to Waterloo. I've not really looked into the latest news surrounding the strikes (if anyone can advise me of any updates that'd be awesome :3), but from what I've read last week the tubes would stop running around 11pm (ish) which means making it back to Waterloo for the last train will be difficult if I have to take a 30-45min bus ride...

Apparently there was trains running on the Jubilee Line last week... So that would be something??

Were heading down from Newcastle and staying near Kings Cross - whilst we can wander to the O2, it's going to a fuckin nightmare getting back!

The DLR is still running, so mebbies that and then the Emirate Airway across to Greenwich?

Any London folk who may be able to offer any advice, fire away :

Trains were running on the jubilee line last week to most stations in the east of London, however the issue is that they may not run as late into the evening as they normally would on a non-strike day.

So far, only TSSA have called off the strike. RMT are still striking. So there may be a better service on the tube but still not a fully operational one. Or there could be even more chaos and confusion.

FEB 2014. i go see frank in London while strikes are happening, strike called off before i get there.

So, what crisis can frank and i prevent next, suggestions?
