'Journey of the Magi' ruined in Ohio

Post by smige2 » Sat Dec 21, 2013 3:03 pm

Just came across this on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asFDD1xWUqA

Frank is singing a lovely piano-backed version of 'Journey of the Magi', which is going well until people start shouting 'Take your shirt off!' in the last verse, causing Frank to cut the song short and have a go at those shouting, in a severe but justified manner.

Surprised to see people like this at FT gigs, but I guess you get them everywhere... I just really hope this doesn't put Frank off playing 'Journey of the Magi' in future, as it's one of my all-time favourites!

During a quiet song as well? That makes it even worse.

I hate hecklers. Especially when I'm at a gig in Notts. I find it embarrassing and I don't want whoever is onstage to leave my home city thinking the crowd is full of heckling twats. I want them to leave with a good impression so they'll happily come back.

This should happen more often.

Beautiful rendition up until the point where it gets ruined. Totally understandable reaction.
I once watched Justin Townes Earle in Dublin deal with a bunch of gobshites in a similar way.
I try not to let hecklers and chatters ruin my enjoyment of gigs, but am not very good at pretending it's not happening. Usually I give it one song and then I move.
Frank's solo tour in Ireland last December had a fair amount of chatters and hecklers. This was a real pity, because solo gigs are rare enough these days, and it was an opportunity to see a different kind of show with different songs. I really enjoyed the shows, but had to do a bit of moving around if the yapping got too distracting. And that's for the audience. Can't imagine what it must be like for the person on stage.
Christy Moore is the master of dealing with hecklers ("You'll be alright when the mushrooms wear off"). You would think twice before speaking during his gigs!
In Ireland there are more and more concerts being put on in churches. These are mainly folk and trad gigs. Excellent acoustics, good use of beautiful buildings that don't see too much other use anymore, and since these places don't have drink licenses the audience is quiet and listens. Perhaps that is the way to go…..

It did here. Frank did not tolerate people fighting at his show. At all. And he put the word on them.

I wasn't there, but was told it was just one drunk girl who wasn't fazed at all by Frank's reaction. And that him getting that pissed* changed the mood of the rest of the show.

I was there for this one. Super excited girl standing right next to me, there to celebrate her birthday with her boyfriend. First Frank show. Huge fan. Yadda, yadda. Drinking too much of something from a bottle she snuck in. Arms with sharp bracelets flailing in my face the whole show. She spilled her beer on me during the very first Smith Street Band song. Boyfriend shouting "Million Dead!" at Frank repeatedly until Frank told him he was about 10 years too late. Not sure what provoked her, but she threw the first punch. I wasn't unhappy to see them go.

*Edited to add that I mean the American definition of the word (annoyed/angry).

I was at the show in Ohio and that girl got everything that was coming to her, as a matter of fact I think Frank let her off pretty easy. The mood of the show did change after the incident but in a good way, Frank was pissed off and just brought more energy to an already energized show. The audience had his back for sure when he was going off on the rude bitch. Sixteen F bombs in 59 seconds!! It was fucking awesome!! Go Frank!

I was absolutely fucking livid for the rest of that show. Really pissed me off. That said, she emailed me the next day to apologise. Her first night out in two years (since becoming a mum), blackout drunk etc. I accepted her apology.
Shows? All of em.

Here's Neil Young getting annoyed with some members of the audience.
Way to go Neil! Nothing worse than people wrangling their way in front of you and then devoting their attention to their phone and not to what's happening on stage…

That girl was a mess! She started pulling my hair when I stepped in front of her to stop her from flailing on some poor guy. That being said, still an awesome gig!

Nice to hear that she apologized, hopefully she actually learns from it too.

Frank had a great line for some chatterboxes at a show I saw, while still playing he just casually dropped the line "If I'm playing too loud for your conversation just let me know". Boom. They deserved it too.

It was a real disappointment that one rude, inconsiderate person had to ruin such a beautiful song, and I'm glad that Frank said something. The rest of the show was awesome, though. It was a delight to see Frank play his first show in my hometown of Cincinnati (and a sold out one at that!) You're welcome back to Cincinnati anytime.

I was disappointed to be standing next to the girl who yelled it; especially since its my favorite FT song. That being said, I was fortunate enough to be in London last night for his show and was talking to quite a few people about the incident. I was surprised news of it had penetrated over to here.
