I'm back home after an awesome three nights following the band from Northampton to Clifton Park to NYC. Great shows, as per usual. The little groupie sing-along we had during soundcheck in Clifton Park was a highlight -- and I met Valderie there. Lots of great fans everywhere I go.

that sing along was fun. we were very lucky the sound was so clear. the 10 of us just standing outside dancing and singing along was hilarious. nice to have met you as well :)

US Tour 2013

Post by Jodyism » Wed Mar 06, 2013 10:43 pm

Getting excited for tonight! Still haven't booked a hotel... I guess I like the thrill of the last minute hunt. So soon!!! Anyone meeting up before for drinks?

TO ANYONE READING-- I NOW HAVE ONE EXTRA TICKET TO TOMORROW'S SHOW AT THE HOTEL CAFE. I'LL SELL IT FOR WHAT I PAID ($24). REPLY HERE IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW IS INTERESTED! I'm told that Frank is on at 7pm sharp (which is why the friend who was originally going to come can't make it after all.)

JODY--
Sorry, but I only got home about 30 minutes ago and am now in a race against the clock to get ready for tomorrow so that I can actually get some sleep once I get home tonight. (Can't take tomorrow off because we'll already have two teachers out in my hallway--that should be chaos enough. Pondering a "sick day" for Friday, though...I'm sure my voice will be hoarse enough by then to sound convincing. ;-)

Anyway, I'm going to probably miss the first opener tonight, too, since my friend has the tickets and she has to race here from her job.

NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL JUST ANNOUNCED FRANK & BAND FOR SATURDAY JULY 27TH. Glad I got my tix before they sold out.

Given the timing, I would think that Lollapalooza in Chicago the following week is a good bet.

Show reports for anyone who’s reading (though I know that all the LA fans who actually post here were at the shows, too.) Took a rare sick day from work today to recover my voice and catch up on lost sleep, so finally have my wits about me enough to be able to write this up… Don't hesitate to correct me on any of this; I was definitely a tired mofo this week and have only my less-than-stellar memory and some cell phone shorthand notes to go on...

Set list from the Roxy – March 6, 2013
I Am Disappeared (I love that they opened with one of my favorite songs ever.)
The Road
Peggy Sang the Blues
Recovery
Glory Hallelujah
Reasons Not to Be an Idiot
The Way I Tend to Be (Frank said this was only the second time they've played it publicly.)
Wessex Boy
Substitute
The Real Damage (!!! – don’t think I’ve heard that live since 2010—such a fun singalong!)
Good and Gone
Barbara Allen (He said this was because he was having a mental block and couldn’t remember which cover he had planned to sing. Good save, Frank. :-)
I Knew Prufrock…
One Foot…
Long Live the Queen
Four Simple Words (I danced my ass off, but based on the fact that the band didn't comment on our dancing performance once the song ended, I would say LA most certainly did not beat Boston at this game. :-(
Try This at Home
I Still Believe
(encore)
If Ever I Stray
Photosynthesis (during which we all did Frank’s bidding and sat/crouched down [atop what were probably dried layers of Motley Crue’s sweat left over from the Roxy’s hair metal halcyon days] before springing up and moshing like mad to the final chorus)
(the fastest version I’ve ever heard of) Dan’s Song, with Craig “all the way from Santa Barbara” Jenkins on harmonica

Hotel Café, March 7 – need help with this one! (JT?)
Love the venue, but even though I knew to expect a short set, it still left me wanting more. (I guess that’s good from the performers' perspective, though.) It was a new arrangement, with Matt joining Frank on mandolin for the majority of the songs, which worked quite well, both musically and for Frank and Matt’s hilarious between-song banter. This ranged from repeated cracks about mandolin solos to instruction from Frank on the proper way to pronounce the word “twat” (since we Yanks don’t like “cunt” so much…allegedly). I felt conflicted during the set, because I knew time was ticking and wanted to hear more songs, but even just listening to them talk was pure entertainment.

Disclaimer: This quasi- set list is definitely not complete or in the correct order. I was a bit flustered at first because, despite my best efforts, we came in after Frank and Matt had started playing and I needed to quickly find a chair for my newly-gimpy friend, so I don’t even know for sure what the first song was or how much we missed. If you were there and can help me edit this, let me know.

Recovery
Good and Gone (I live in Hollywood, but still love hearing “Fuck you, Hollywood” in the context of these lyrics. :-)
Losing Days
Anymore (dedicated to the Sleeping Souls, even though Frank said it’s a harsh song to dedicate to anyone…understandable)
The Way I Tend to Be
Tattoos (prefaced by Frank’s concise summary of having his knuckles tattooed the same day at the shop across the street: “Fucking OW.”)
I Still Believe
Photosynthesis
Ballad of Me and My Friends (apparently as the result of the “emotional blackmailing” brought upon him by some very dedicated fans… I support this totally, by the way.)
American Girl (Petty)
[no encore; the whole set was only 45 minutes]

Scott, nice to see you and the family again! Tiffany (sp?), nice to meet you and hope you enjoyed your stay in LA--time to go check out your photos! Jody, sorry that you missed the set on Thursday, but they’ll be back in town before you know it! JT, again, sorry we never got to chat—apologies to you because it just dawned on me that I was probably standing near you—did the blonde on crutches (my friend) have the seat next to you? I should’ve remembered that was you!

Thats a pretty sweet lineup West! Only thing I noticed missing was sons of liberty. Did he not play at either venue?

Yeah, I thought the Roxy show was a great set overall. Nope, no "Sons of Liberty", though I've never considered it a predictable part of a FT set. I've seen him play twelve times now (solo and full band) and, just going from memory, I'd say he's only played "Sons" half or less than half of those times. For the record, I'm not recommending you try the emotional blackmail angle mentioned above if you really want to hear it... but apparently, it sometimes works if you're someone who goes to a lot of FT gigs. ;-)

Oh Im not picky about what songs artists play. Its up to them entirely. I actually dislike it when people yell requests, but thats just me. Thanks though west :)

Cool. On the subject of pet peeves, though, don't get me started on the twats [pronounced with a short 'a', mind you] who were making way too much noise during "Barbara Allen"... grrrr.

I know, I know but still can't believe that we missed it! We will just have to make one more show stop next time to make up for it. I still cant scrub the memory of Lady Felinavie or whatever so insistent on that stupid photo on god knows whose camera..

JT- Wish we had more time to catch up... next show!

Scott and the other guys who helped me back up when the final song got a little more rowdy than I thought it would, I really appreciate your help... I should've been ready for it, but one big shove from a fellow crowd person was enough to eat shit. It could've been worse but honestly, thank you for your help.

Tiffiny [I knew I spelled your name wrong; won't happen again!], thanks for posting the links. Fantastic photos--I think my favorite is the crowd-surfing one. And speaking of our new favorite so-cliche Sunset Strip attention whore--whom I had actually forgotten about it, too--it looks like you captured her in Photo 19. She was a piece of work; I'm really surprised that crabby bouncer lady was putting up with her nonsense.
