Let's Make a GIS of Frank Turner Shows

Post by Zoe_Bee » Thu Feb 02, 2017 3:45 am

Hi Everyone

I want to take Frank's Live Archive and create a GIS (Geographical Information System (pronounced "jizz" (not really))). My plan is to use something like Leaflet to create a web-enabled GIS that everyone can see. http://leafletjs.com/

I have the list of shows with dates and the venues in a spreadsheet but to add the shows to a map I need the latitude and longitude of each venue. Given that there are (to date!) 2016 of them, it's not practical for me to do them all myself so I'm asking for help.

The list of gigs is in this Google Sheets file: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing
Note: you need a computer to do this, a phone or tablet is impractical.

This is what I would like people to do:
1) find a show with no link shown in Column D.
2) copy and paste the venue into Google Maps; check that it's the right location.
3) THIS IS IMPORTANT: zoom in on the venue as close as you can get and center the marker on your screen. The lat and long coded in the URL is the center of your window, not the venue itself.
3) copy and paste the Google Maps link in the address bar on your browser back to the spreadsheet. Don't worry about formatting. The spreadsheet with automatically extract the latitude and longitude of the venue from the URL.

Thanks
Zoe

What fun. I have stuck in a few venues that no longer exist in London, along with my old flat from The Road video and some others. I love a bit of Google maps so have bookmarked and will come back to it.
Beverley, Birmingham, Blackheath, Boston, Cheltenham, Dublin, Donington, Guildford, Hatfield, Hoboken, Knebworth, Latitude, Leamington Spa, London, Manchester, New York, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading, Sayreville, Sheffield, Southend, Wembley, Wolverhampton.

I put in the coordinates for all of the Portland, OR shows, including show #2016 that didn't have the gig info entered yet.

Currently filling in some german venues; oh it makes me sad to realise he played so many wonderful small venues while I didn't know about his music. Phew... :(
54 gigs in 16 countries...
moving, keep moving - the tour never stops.

FIRST CRACK

I am planning to mess around with some more sophisticated software once there is more data but I have created a *.kmz with the first 258 shows that have coordinates. You will need to download and install Google Earth to view this but it's currently the easiest way to view the data. https://www.google.com/earth/download/gep/agree.html

I have uploaded a kmz here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9I_1w ... sp=sharing

If you click it, the kmz will open in a lame ass version of Google Maps. You need to then download the file (click arrow at top right of map) and open it with full-on Google Earth.

EDIT: pick the most recent file from here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

OMG, that's such an nerdy and thus awesome idea :) I love geography and maps and will definitely do my share of contributing coordinates this weekend.

I've completed the Manchester venues. That spreadsheet is brilliant! I love a good Excel formula
Will update some more when I'm not supposed to be doing work...

Filling this out is actually kind of fun. For the nerd that I am :D Quick tip for everyone else: if you've found the coordinates for a venue, check list (or Frank's archive in a second tab) to see if he has played there multiple times and fill the data in for each of those gigs.

Ok, maybe you all already did that this way and I'm the only one who didn't think of that and had to look up venue coordinates twice

OMG Zoe, the "frank Stats" spreadsheet. I'm dying at the category descriptions for the songs: "I hate you all, especially you, Amy" I'm a little cranky right now and feel sorry for myself" "Life is great, let's play some songs! I might even have a girlfriend right now."

Filling this out is giving me a huge case of "oh, shit, why didn't I go to that show, and that show, and that show??"

Ha Ha. I made that one last year. I was organizing the other day and put it in the same folder not realizing everyone would see it too. Frank tweeted a link to that spreadsheet and I was sick with anguish. I could never handle fame.
