Pre Gig Set list

Post by NickSouthampton » Sat Nov 01, 2014 3:36 pm

I just got some tickets to see Philip Glass next month and on the Flyer it has a list of the things he is going to play.

Philip Glass CIVIL warS #2; CIVIL warS - Cologne section (1984); Selections from Music in 12 Parts (1971-74); The Grid Koyaanisqatsi (1982); Floe Glassworks (1983); Façades Glassworks (1983); Rubric Glassworks (1983); Music in Similar Motion (1969); Act III The Photographer (1983)

I know this is common with classical concerts but he is sort of in-between. Anyway, it got me wondering if I would like to have a set list before I go and see a Rock/Pop band. The nearest I have got to it is seeing the set list on the stage floor, you can often see it if you are down at the front and can read upside down.

It's nice having a surprise, but sometimes it would be good to just relax into a less familiar song knowing that my favourite will be along later. It also gets round people shouting for songs.I feel it might take away some of the magic though.

Any thoughts on if you would like to have a set list before a show?

I'm often down front, but I don't look at the setlist. Spoils the surprise. Also, knowing something is coming that I really, really want to hear kinda takes away from what's played before, because my focus is on what's coming next. And then there's the bands that don't always follow the setlist. Seeing something on a setlist that's a dream song, and then having it skipped, is really disappointing.

I agree with reitzel6570. If I am at the front I don't look at the setlist and tell others around me not to talk to me about it.
I actually go to great lengths not to find out in advance. When Bruce Springsteen starts a new tour I try to go into pre-internet mode. I stop looking at his website and avoid reviews. I also instruct friends not to reveal anything. I want it to be a surprise at my first gig. I am always intrigued when bands bring back old songs that you might not be expecting.
There was a thread on here sometime ago about full album shows. Some comments were that the predictability of a full album show makes it less exciting than a regular gig. I would agree with that.

The 'no spoilers' thing is why I engineered myself to go to the first gigs of 2 of the last 3 Muse arena tours, even more of a thing with them as they have a lot of stage production as well as the setlist issue.

Always do my best to avoid, to the point where last time I saw future of the left, I practically squinted until they hit the stage in case I compulsively glanced at the list.
RE: full album shows, Manic Street Preachers struck a good balance last week on the Holy Bible Tour - they did a second set after the album with some mad surprises (B-sides etc.) in there.
