Best Broke Band Member Jobs

Post by flickerclear17 » Thu Oct 09, 2014 8:45 pm

I'm guessing lots of us are in this situation. Doing music...and crappy jobs on the side to pay the bills.

Anyone doing anything which they'd particularly recommend?

I found this post from Frank in the forum:
'I worked in telesales for a while, worked for excite.com (remember them? ha), did some low level HTML programming, did the grunt level research for a book for a historian etc.'

All remote work by the looks of it which is perhaps a smart way to go. But I'm getting distracted, recommendations/discussion!

I guess it depends on what level your music career is it.

I know a lot of 'full-time' musicians who earn so little from that, that they still need a decent full time job to pay the bills.
But doing something with music is always good. I know guys who are music teachers, work for booking agents etc.

Why not do music and a good job - rather than a crappy one?

That's the dream, but then I guess the question becomes, how many good jobs can you do that don't get in the way of making music?
Good jobs tend to be full time, which tends to mean not a lot of time left over to play. Does teaching kids and booking bands really improve you as an artist?
If good jobs exist which leave you a fair bit of time to play then I want to know about them! I guess that's why I created the thread.

I read about one guy who works mastering tracks as his day job. That seems quite a good option as he can do it any time and he gets to listen to a lot of music and hopefully improve it.

Also joining up with a temp agency may work.

So you only work when you are able to. Weeks you are touring you just say you can't work

All helpful suggestions guys. Touring also made me think, what sorts of jobs could you be doing during the travelling part of touring? I guess this is why remote work jobs can potentially be so great.

A friend's son is currently working as a delivery driver for a wholesale flower company while he keeps ticking over with music stuff with his dad's band HD7, their electro-acoustic duo Acoustimosh and his new prog project The Dark Rasmurn Project. Yes this is a shameless plug for them all, lol, just about to post in the non-Frank gigs thread about HD7... (His girlfriend is working for a PPI claims company, she did a drama degree and wants to be a director...)

I imagine delivery driver is a tricky one to pull off, the hours can't be flexible. But it works out ok for him?

I forgot to post about HD7...

yeah he works from about 4am to noon-ish then sleeps, I figure it's as awkward as any other regular job? It'll be tricky around Valentines/Mothers Day/Christmas...

Learn how to do some coding or graphics jobs.

I guess it really depends on what you can do.
