Punk lifestyle 1970s

Post by helentx » Sun Jun 22, 2014 12:37 pm

Ever since I started going to gigs a couple of years ago I've wondered why I didn't have a particularly rose tinted memory of the 70s birth of punk. Not that I didn't absorb some of the music but the punks in the Kings Road were terrifying. Hanging around, looking a bit scuzzy with scrawny dogs on strings I can't say they presented an attractive option to the shy girl getting to grips with life. & this was their reality which wouldn't have helped me. Good to know I didn't misremember that period in contemporary history.

Fascinating. I couldn't stop reading. Like watching a train crash. Amazing how they had this sense of "group" (and they did), yet often robbed, cheated, stole, or even raped each other to maintain and survive, or just because they were high. The homelessness, starvation, disease that persisted, and yet they still remained loyal to this sense of community, of which music was just a part. The author's memory and ability to share these events in such a credible and not glamorized way makes this a powerful piece. I grew up in the same era, but this is as far removed from any way of life I could imagine. Thanks for sharing. I hope there is more writing beyond this essay.
