O2 Academy Brixton - aaarrrggghhh

Post by NikkiS » Sun Mar 09, 2014 10:50 pm

That's it, I'm giving up on Brixton. I keep going back, convincing myself that the sound quality can't really be as crap as I remember from the last gig, but it is. Why is it such a highly thought of venue? Someone enlighten me.

Living up in Aberdeen, I've only ever been to Brixton Academy once and that was to see Jimmy Carr last year.

The left hand speakers didn't even work for half the show. We could barely hear from our position and most certainly could tell the speakers weren't on.

Jimmy tried to have banter with someone on the very front and only then did they admit(and everyone else joined in) they couldn't actually hear a word. We were probably 45-60mins in to the show.

Only then did the team address the problems.

How/why they didn't notice or take action long before was rather baffling.

I went just before Xmas to see Placebo and the sound was good - I was at the back of the venue and it sounded pitch perfect ...

Brixton doesn't, as far as I know, have an in house PA. You have to hire in (generally the case with venues of that size and up). So I'd imagine they have a cheap / local go-to option, and some bands spend the money to hire a decent sound system (we use Nitelites in Newcastle and they're ace).
Shows? All of em.

Perhaps my old ears aren't discerning enough - I saw FT / Green Day there last year, and also went to the XFM Winterwonderland thing (Temples/Chvrches/White Lies/Miles Kane/Vaccines) and it was all good as far as I could tell..

What Frank says is correct. Touring bands who bring their own PA have a significantly better sound in there.

I've never had problem with sound there. My grip with the place is that you are not allowed to stand up on the balcony.

When Leftfield took their PA they literally brought the roof down. My body was vibrating all night long from the bass - it was lovely..

So if it's not a venue issue must be an issue with me; maybe my freaky ears just don't like the Brixton acoustics. I've seen the same bands at other venues (admittedly smaller) with no sound issues and surely most bands have their go-to sound systems and stick with them? Did wonder if it was just my aversion to bigger venues, but Mr Turner at even bigger Nottingham, no issues; freaky ears fully appreciated that. 'Fraid Brixton's just going to have to stay firmly at the bottom of my preferred venue list.

Thats a shame - I really think it is one of the best out there.

Shame. I love most things about it :
- very accessible to "out of townies" via KingsX
- sloped floor: we can all see!
- handy toilets down front for that urgent post-support act piss
- lots of cold, cold beer outlets. Mmmm, beer without queuing.

I saw The John Butler Trio there the other night, and not only were they awesome, but I was really impressed by the O2 in general. It's a really pretty amphitheatre, and all the little traits such as the sloped floor and nearby toilets make it awesome, although it was a little snug trying to get out of the venue.
