A BRAND New cd each week this year - suggestions?

Post by Bossman66 » Tue Jan 21, 2014 7:16 pm

Hi people

I posted this on a couple of Springsteen sites, but I figured you guys listen to quite a lot of less mainstream stuff that might interest me, after all I found out about Jim Lockey & others through following Frank

I made a New Year's Resolution I think I can keep this year - I want to buy one new cd each week this year.

When I was a kid I thought each year that I'd buy all the No1 singles during the year, but I never achieved it because there was always some rubbish like Mr Blobby for example that I couldn't bring myself to buy

The intention is to buy a strictly 'NEW' cd each week, but I've already had to buy a re-release (not my preferred option) as that was all there was week commencing 30th Dec 2013, so re-releases are allowed but not my ideal option.

I'm intending to make my selection based on things I like, reviews, friends suggestions etc

So far this year then I've bought

30th Dec - Slayer - Seasons In the Abyss (re-release) - Not me I'm afraid
6th Jan - Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Wig Out At Jagbags : &
Gray & Wyatt - Naming The Darkness (I'd ordered this but it hadn't arrived) - Liked them both
13th Jan - Bruce High Hopes - Love it of course! &
Mark Lanegan - Anthology 1989-2011 - it was OK but a bit samey (I wasn't sure if Bruce counted as I'd definately have bought that ordinarily, lol)

I suspect I'm likely to buy quite a bit of stuff I don't enjoy but hoping to discover something I really like along the way

If you help me with choosing a cd each week, I'll post a short review on Fridays or Saturdays.

This week I bought Transgender Dysphoria Blues by 'Against Me' & I'm loving it a lot. Next week I'm leaning towards 'Gaslight Anthem's 'B-Sides' but could be swayed as I'd probably have bought that anyway & I'm not sure whether ones I'd have bought anyway count or not.....lol

off the top of my head - some of my favorite recent aquisitions are

Ben Marwood - Back Down
Chris T-T - The Bear
Emily Barker and The Red Clay Halo - Dear River
Eureka Machines - Remain In Hope
Gaz Brookfield - In The Company Of Thieves
Hope & Social - Box Set
Jetplane Landing - Don't Try
Oxygen Thief - Accidents do not happen they are caused

also - if you haven't ever listened to New Model Army - Thunder and Consolation is an excellent place to start.
also - if you haven't ever listened to Fighting With Wire, you should :-)

PS - no I haven't got any further with Springsteen. Had to deal with the plumber today amongst other things. Head is spinning with all the current crap so listening to to more familar stuff is more soothing .... I'll get there! I promise :D

All good suggestions I'm sure Bella and I will check them out, but right now I want a new cd that is released next week 27/01/14 that might interest me, lol.

It will probably be Gaslight Anthem B-Sides as I've said though.

Thank you 'Blonde' too. LP's is the answer. Against Me is only 29 mins long though, but it rocks!

Ooops my bad - Sorry!

I tend to never have had enough money on release days in the past. Plus I generally try to get stuff direct from the artist/musician/person if I can.

These days I have so much catching up to do I'm trying to ignore new stuff and listen to what I've already bought first. Like that Springsteen box set that's sat looking at me saying "play me.. you know you want to!" It's competeing with all the other stuff I have bought over the last while that is also begging to be played :-)

I got Frightened Rabbit - Midnight Organ Flight with some Christmas money from my In-Laws (bless) and its still in its wrapper... staring at me... saying "play me... play me now..."

must read whole post and ask if unsure....!!

in my defense my brain is fried. I thought last week was bad - this week is... less good so far...
Although -todays silver lining is that I finally have heat and hot water again!

I look forward to seeing this thread as it goes forward, its a great idea.

well ... i'm hoping to put out a new single in May (it's ready - but I want it out when the weather is warmer as its a summery song) - then the 6 track EP will be out in June / July ...

it may be the last Pigeons output for a while (it might not) ... basically having conversations with myself about what I do next. anyways

Did anyone mention Algiers - debut album "You're The Captain" out on Monday 27th January on the Xtra Mile Recordings label?

Look for Algiers - Lighthouse on youtube.

Heard them supporting Jim Lockey & then Chris T-T at the end of September & they'll be at The Monarch again on 5th Feb (free entry)

You might have to look around for it (try Poison City Records in Melbourne) but Jen Buxton's Don't Change Your Plans is amazing. Please go buy so everybody knows how awesome she is. Also from Poison City, get Wil Wager from the Smith Street Band's solo album, Lakita.

Also Smith Street Band - Don't Fuck With Our Dreams

Corry Brannan - Mutt
Linc Lefevre and the Insiders - Resonation
The Bennies - Party Party Party
Perry Keyes - Johnny Ray's Downtown

These are awesome, but if you only get one, get Jen Buxton. Her voice is ace. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZLNEOr6BUA

Poison City are an ace record label.

I would add the Hoodlum Shouts to that as well.
