Vinyl!

Post by liamsmyth » Fri Oct 25, 2013 5:23 pm

So I got a record player for my birthday this week and absolutely love it! Got a lot of old records, some new reissues aswell, and going to order myself sleep is for the week and tape deck heart on vinyl from xtra mile when I have the money (student loans are restrictive!). So I just thought it would be cool to ask if anyone has any advice/anecdotes for someone new to vinyl! And if anyone knows a good second hand record store in liverpool, that'd be good too :)

From what I'm aware the only one I knew of shut down earlier this year. There is Probe Records next to the Bluecoat but I can't say I'm a fan of the place. I used to find lots of great second hand vinyl in charity shops, you'd be amazed at what people throw out. Otherwise I would say keep an eye out for record fairs, I know Mello had one a few weeks ago.

Oh and as you are in Liverpool and in search of vinyl can I recommend you seek out Silent Sleeps debut album, it's only available on vinyl but it's well worth forking out for.

Cheers mate, yeah I had a look around oxfam and a few other places the other day but it all seemed to be "the very best of Engleburt Humpledinck" and old Kylie 7" singles. Probably went in at the wrong time...found one on google called Cult Vinyl aswell but can't find it anywhere and the last reference I can find online is from 2010 or something...so don't know about that one. I shall definitely keep my eyes open for that record! It's been amazing to actually *have* to sit down and listen to a whole album rather than skipping and choosing for the first time in my life...makes the music feel more precious somehow? I don't know.

It's worth popping into the Drum and Bass vinyl store on RSD as they get all sorts of things in that their customers don't want and won't buy. I picked up a few things from there this year far easier than going into Probe.

Never EVER pass a sore without popping in for a quick look, no matter how many times you've been in there before. I was a few miles from home during the week, knew a small store that stocks a very limited amount of vinyl but I always seem to pick up something in there, anyway, got in for a quick look & got myself the Record Store Day releases by The Strypes & Jake Bugg, & both very reasonably priced (€12 for The Strypes double 7" & €6 for Jake Bugg 7"), could not believe my luck !!!!
:D

My husband has about 2,000 records. Seriously. Lots from second hand stores like the Salvation Army. Lots from used record stores, garage sales, record shows and the like. Lately he gets them off Ebay. Every few days another one shows up at our house, even though he said he was "done collecting what I need" several years ago.

Cheers for the help and advice all :) i've got to admit, I went out and bought another two today, found a great record store in an indoor market type place (grand central I think it was rubber_soul? Cult vinyl or something) which was closed because it's a sunday! :( But they had some great stuff there which I wanted, and will go back for in the window...then I found an antique store just down the road that had a great collection...so I got a 70s tubular bells LP and an old Van Halen record (not very cool I know but there's no accounting for taste!) so now I've just got to wait until my parents come visit at the weekend and I got a player again! (it was too hard to carry up on the train from home!) still, a pleasant way to spend a hungover sunday, which I guess is the whole point!

I think I know the one, there used to be a really cool shop in there that sold Megadrive and SNES games as well.

Yeah, the top floor was a pub when I moved here. Played it a few times as well, most likely why it shut down.

Don't stack your vinyl on top of each other. Store them standing up. Get a shelf and make sure they aren't on the floor (especially if you're in a basement - flooding potential) - keep em off the floor on a proper stand. Something cheap will work - just store em properly :)

What kind of turntable did you get? Is it a compact, all-in-one dealy? With speakers built into it? Or is it a little higher end, where you need the extra equipment like amplifiers, separate speakers, cables etc.?

Congrats on the TT by the way. Years of listening ahead - it will change the way you listen to / view music.
