Why RSD does not work

Post by marowak » Sat Apr 20, 2013 11:09 pm

Last year I queued up for 7hrs to make sure I got the 'still believe' 7" / and a few other records.

The people at the front of the queue were all traders who got the most sought after releases with a view of selling them.

Yes - RSD is great for little shops and helps boost their incomes and allows artists to put out some cool limited releases - but the 'eBay market' takes away all that fun.

I want a copy of 'recovery' and there are currently 34 copies on there / purchased by people who are not frank fans and just want to make money out of the whole thing.

It's as bad a ticket touts ...

Maybe I am grumpy as I don't want to pay triple price for a record I want and for those who say / you should have gone to the shop ... It's not always that easy for some people...

Grumble over ....

07 04.4 11.5 17.5 08.6 10.11

The fact that it's 'easy money' for people absolutely doesn't make it OK, though?! There are a lot of things that can make you easy money, but also make you an absolute twat for doing them.

Oh, but I think RSD is great. If it can help keep the independents open then it's a winner for me.

OH GOD NO !!! I wasn't approving it, just saying it's easy money; you can see why people do it.

I was tempted to buy some stuff for selling on, didn't bother in the end, got 2 of the 3 I was after (think it was Meatloaf that said "that ain't bad" ), plus some news this moring that dusty grooves in the states are selling the Weller Box Set, limited amounts so got my order in, hopefully I get one.

Sorry I took that the wrong way!!!

I'm an idiot - picked up vinyl for folk yesterday (I didn't go home) forgetting I'm following my friend running the marathon around London, whilst I'm on crutches. And vinyl is heavy!

I'm half and half on this, whilst it was great to see so many people going into record shops yesterday and buying vinyl/cds that are usually there as well as RSD exclusives I was also a little annoyed that a whole bunch of these people are getting vinyl I want because it's 'cool' to take part in a day or to sell them on. I'm firmly stuck in the old world and always buy vinyl, I'm not saying I'm more entitled to things over anyone else but I always wonder how many of these people actually have a record player at home?

I'm well aware I sound like an idiot in that last post.

It's a funny one this. I went along to watch the instore gigs and had a good time. I haven't had a record player since I went to Uni in 2002 so I didn't buy anything at all. I have three records 'displayed' on the wall in my spare room because they have nice covers and mean something to me (only one of which I bought since I got rid of my record player). I was thinking of buying Recovery to do the same, but I couldn't part with the £7 as I just wouldn't play it at all. I would rather spend a little more money and buy an art print if it is just for display purposes. Maybe if the labels didn't package the records so bloody nicely then they would be less of a collectors item!

So if people don't actually play records, what do they do with them? Just have them stacked in a room? Seems a bit pointless.

I'm not sure people buy them because it's cool to take part in the day. People buy them because it's cool to buy records. Just like it was cool to wear trucker caps once upon a time. Just like it was cool to buy koRn patches and sew them onto your rucksack. It's swings and roundabouts.

As for ebay - people should not pay silly prices for things - that would soon stop it. People should stop buying the Daily Mail too. But it's not going to happen.

Haha - yes. I'm surprised any people remember them!

Talking about records, they are the only band that I have all the records of. But I didn't pay silly prices on ebay, I used to pick them up from record fairs in the late 90's/early 00's.

Great band, have two E.P.s of theirs, would have to have a bit've a root to find them. Isn't one of the members in a popular Metal band now ??, so I was told anyway, can't remember the name...............

I loved RSD this year. I queued outside Crash Records in Leeds from 5.30am (ouch, especially after the gig the night before) but it was worth it, I managed to get everything I wanted (that I remembered about anyway!). I did only buy RSD releases but I did have a spending spree in my local record store a couple of weeks ago. But the best bit was talking to people in the queue. We ended up queuing behind some friends, who in turn were queuing behind people they'd met in the queue the previous year. It was lovely to share stories with people who are passionate about music and gigs and although they weren't into quite the same music (they were prog fans) it was nice hearing how they too are a big group of fans from several countries that mostly know each other via the internet and get each other into new bands.

The people who do only buy the releases to sell on ebay are cunts and are probably taking a break from their other favourite cunty activity, being a ticket tout.

Will and Joe went on to form Hell is for Heroes, Wojtek Godzisz went very folky and then rocked it up again on his album but I haven't heard anything from him for a while. Not sure what happened to the other guys. I was never too bothered with Symposium until 'Killing Position' came out and that was awesome!

Also I remember, and I dare say drinkthesunshine will remember this as well, when you could pick up a 7" for 99p brand new! Those were the days!
