Album Leaks

Post by tarpster77 » Tue Apr 09, 2013 11:54 pm

My discussion point here is what is the general consensus on leaks in terms of, if you have paid for and pre-ordered the album, is it wrong to download the leak?

I put this question on Twitter with no one particularly being sure.

If you Frank are reading this I would like to know your opinion, after all it is your album

Leaks happen but judging by the removal of a previous thread I believe the general consensus is that it's best to not discuss here.

Unfortunate it happens and I hate that it does,it really ruins the industry.

But on the other hand, it's already happened, I have preordered the album so I want to download it.

To be honest I hope Frank finds the fucker who did it again and tells him exactly was he told the last guy and that he never has a job in music again.

I have edited the first post slightly as I think it has a valid discussion point.

I did this once for another band, thinking that I've already paid for it, what does it matter? I felt really guilty doing it when one of the band members said they were disappointed that the build up to the album launch had been ruined by everyone downloading it early. So what should have been a great fanfare on launch day was a bit of a damp squib.

My thinking now is, if I've waited this long, then what's another couple of weeks? Plus these days a lot of albums seem to be streamed the week before release so you have even less of a wait.

Sorry, but it's wrong, and on some level everyone knows it. Just the act of clicking on a download link indicates a support for this practice. We can all complain about this flawed industry and sympathize with the poor artist, but it comes down to personal accountability, and each person refusing, because of principle, to engage in it. We are impinging on the artist's personal freedom to release the album in the way he wants. Yes, there is a monetary difference between the people who preordered the album and those that are stealing it, but I say philosophically, no difference.

That music isn't ours to hear yet, whether we've bought the album or not. I guess in a way, it still belongs to someone else, because they don't want it to be released. I'd definitely call that stealing.

Does the artist own the music or the medium it's obtained? I've bought all of his albums thus far on cd - and at varying stages have illegally downloaded them too. It's much much easier across new laptops, phones & mp3's.

I've pre-ordered the CD. It'll likely sit on my shelf as it's just easier to go to my favourite torrent site & sync it to all my devices. Amazon Cloud is the thing that'll get me closest to changing my ways. That's an excellent service.

All of them! Sleep came out in 2007. That's decades ago for all of us. I've burned through a pc, couple of laptops, mp3 players & phones since then (disposable culture!). Generally I replace when things die rather than upgrade so there's no data transfer (and that'd be more difficult than just re-downloading anyway!).

Sooo the the discography is on home laptop, phone, pad & mp3 player. Granted the flash new phone makes the mp3 a tad antiquated now. I look forward to where we're heading with the cloud & 4G, login & stream - no need for a HD copy. But for now this is easiest!

And sweet jesus - I've only just discovered it's Sleep is For The Week and not weak! That changes everything.

I actually only learned recently that it wasn't legal to put a CD into my computer and rip it to iTunes and listen to it via my iPod. It sure didn't stop me but ffs there are so many moral dilemmas in this day and age ;)

It was also a good point made regarding the streaming- I felt really bad about a certain album leaking that we're all referring to here but also a bit of wow, it only happened two weeks beforehand and a week before the usual stream.

Anyway, I've wandered away from a point here and I'm a big believer in waiting to hear something the way the artist intended for you to hear it.

I don't want to listen to the leak; at the same time it's very frustrating that other people have herd the album and I haven't.

Considering Frank probably reads these, saying you've downloaded the leak probably isn't the best idea on his Forum...

I can only imagine that the leak of a record feels the same as someone reading or distributing something I'd written, say through a draft being posted on a blog, which would make me (and has in the past made me) incredibly pissed off.

The thing about creativity is that is doesn't finish when the 'product' is finished. It's a fluid entity which includes launches/releases/publication. Whether or not you have paid for the release, you are disrupting that process. It also, in a way, cheapens the final product. Anything you do, including downloading an album you have, or may, pay for, encourages this behaviour.

And that sounds like total wank, but ho hum.

How do you come across a leak?
Honest question of which I don't want specifics, I ask because I haven't had a leak forced into my paws for a long time, so unless I was specifically searching (of which others had thus linked me to said leak) I wouldn't naturally come across it in my interweb life.
So then if are you going out looking for a leaked album to download whilst saying you have already pre-ordered why are you doing so?
You are getting the album anyway so really what is the difference between waiting an extra week or two?
If you haven't pre-ordered the album and are downloading I hope you like it enough to pay for it when does it comes out, but surely streams solve the issues of trying before buying.
For me personally I had been eagerly awaiting an album release last month and wanted to buy the album at the shows I was going to, so survived on streams until I could hold that badboy in my hands. I had no inclination at any point to go find a leaked version and indeed despite looking for reviews didn't come across a link for one.

So why and how are you coming across these temptations in your online life?
Am I too sheltered in my online life?
