Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
Now this is something that was discussed a lot when Frank played at the Olympics.
I am bringing it up now as I've noticed Recovery nearly already has 200,000 YouTube views, loads of radiov play in the UK on Radio 1 and XFM, has been interviewed for MTV and got a licensing deal on Tape Deck Heart with Interscope.
The discussion really is about what you guys think about this?
My personal view is that Frank deserves all publicity and success due to how hard he's worked over the years, and I'll remain in support of Frank as long as he sticks to being the guy he is now, ie awesome, not become one of the dicks, to put it in Frank's lyric terms.

Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
THERE was some idiotic comment on the youtube comments for RECOVERY when someone said they did not want Frank to get into the top 10 ....
Quite frankly - I think he deserves every sale, play or bit of success he gets. Look at Bastille as another example. Number 2 in the charts under One Direction.
I think some people forget that Frank is on his 5th album, been solo for 9? years and worked fucking hard to date. I don't think 'success' will now change him ....

I think if he works hard, and writes good songs, then he deserves to have a successful career.
But I also think he's entitled to do whatever he wants with his life, and it's not really any of our business?

Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
I've never fully understood people who don't want an artist to be successful. Personally I'm hoping Tape Deck Heart will be as high as high as possible on the charts when its released. No matter what singer/band it is when they release a new album I'm always hoping they'll do well in the charts if I'm a fan.

Why anyone wouldn't want someone to be successful is beyond me! It's like saying to someone yeah go and teach but you can only teach these few kids, ignore the rest of them.

Well we all know Frank is some musical god and we cant be selfish, we need to share this music its absolutely amazing and he hasn't changed his genre on music plus he is singing about what he normally would. I think Recovery will be a big break and got fucking on him! I love the man and his music mainstream or not still my role model

Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
I'm a bit of a music snob, but lets face it.
Frank deserves all the success he gets (even if 100,000 of those 200,000 hits may have been me
)
I'm going to pull out the example of someone like The Vaccines, their first album, in my opinion was good, and because everyone expected the same standard album, (in my opinion their second album is poison), their disappointment was shown when it was clear to see, whilst still popular with the NME Bashers (Admittedly, i've seen them 11 times, but they supported 8 of those, 3 at festivals!), they have resorted to coming out with things like 'I love 1D' and stuff like this, when in reality, no one over 12 likes One Direction, but pulls support.
I can almost 100% guarantee, everyone on this forum, be it here in the UK, or anywhere else in the World has seen frank in a Nambucca sized bar, met him and feel amazing proud to say they have when they see him headlining Wembley Arena! Whilst, i didn't quite feel the same satisfaction seeing Frank in Manchester Apollo as i did, when i saw him in Night And Day, but his music is fantastic, and Recovery is an absolute tune, if music stations want to pick up on it, it brings in more fans, and that can only be brilliant for the man.
I've felt upset by bands and musicians becoming mainstream as they can forget their roots, but we all know Frank will be back in a Camden pub playing a secret (not so much) show, He'll do his small shows, and he'll make sure everyone can hear him live.
Oh, and to clarify... I might of had a drink, it's a friday night after all! But this is inspired! Well Done Frank, You Deserve it!

He`s gonna piss a lot of hipsters off thats for sure.
Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
I consider Frank to already be a success. And I'm not sure being more mainstream is something to strive for. Especially if it means changing the way you do things. But, if the mainstream changes their listening styles to accomodate Frank (and others like him), then that's a good thing. But looking at the charts, I'm not sure that's going to happen. Attracting new listeners via Tape Deck Heart can only increase Frank's standing in the music world though. Every new listener will seek out his back catalogue.... which is just what I did about a year and a half ago. It's all good!
Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
I always thought it silly when people stop liking an artist because of mainstream success.
Frank wholeheartedly deserves to enter the "Born in the U.S.A." phase of his career!

Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
If I have to start paying £40 for an academy gig, or Frank starts pulling an axel rose THEN I'll start complaining.
Until then I'm still going to get excited every time I hear Frank played in a restaurant or on the radio, particularly the main like R1.
He deserves every success.

i also think its weird when people dont want what they like to become successful/popular/widely accepted. i dont know about anyone else, but when i find something i love i talk about it with my friends, im compelled to share the awesome ive found and like when my friends share with me.
like, ive brought many friends to shows of franks where they ended up falling in love with his tunes. i guess i just dont understand why other people who share what they like with friends as well, would be against an artist being more popular just because they weren't the ones responsible for the influx of new fans.
to repeat what everyones already said - frank deserves every bit of attention he'll get from TDH

Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
Frank's worked his arse off for nearly a decade, with hardly any breaks. I think he's a modern day success story. He's breaking through to a bigger audience with an already cult following and years of experience behind him. In a pretty stagnant music industry lately, it's promising to see great musicians break through, despite not caring the slightest about who's occupying top spot in the UK Top 40 this week, I can't deny that Frank deserves as much success as possible.

Re: Frank breaking through to the mainstream?
I do this. My poor mom gets bombarded with whatever I am interested in, she's like my best friend so she gets what I'd normally share with others. I keep telling her I want to take her to see Frank, but she's somewhat insistant she wants to see Green Day instead. This is from the woman that banned video games and didn't want rock music in her house because "we didn't believe in it". If Green Day plays near her, I'll look into taking her, maybe then I can get her to see Frank, plus it's been three years since I last saw my mom, I should go see her.valderie wrote: i dont know about anyone else, but when i find something i love i talk about it with my friends, im compelled to share the awesome ive found and like when my friends share with me. like, ive brought many friends to shows of franks where they ended up falling in love with his tunes.
I do think that Frank deserves as much success as possible. It bothers me a bit when people say they like an artist, but that they hope they don't get "too big".
