Songs that kick you in the gut

Post by RobH » Sun Feb 24, 2013 1:25 am

Hello. I'm not an emotional man, but I'm in an emotional mood. Which songs make you uncharacteristically feel feelings?

Mine is 'The last time' by reuben, it makes me sad about everyone I don't see anymore

[I've edited this at least three times; this thread is really bringing out the OCD in me!]

"Jet Lag", "Must Try Harder", "I Still Believe", "I Am Disappeared", "One Foot Before the Other", and "Wanderlust" every time
many other FT songs at different times
"Once in a Lifetime" Talking Heads
"Johnny Appleseed" Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros
"Midnight Mile" Bouncing Souls
"Float" Flogging Molly
"Dumb" and "Something in the Way" Nirvana
"In the Pines" (originally by Leadbelly; covered as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" on Nirvana Unplugged)
"Misty Morning Albert Bridge" The Pogues
"Girl", "Precious Things", "Tear in Your Hand", "Pretty Good Year", "Bells for Her" Tori Amos
"Someone Like You" Adele (yeah yeah, SHUT UP)
"Hallelujah" Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley versions
"Handwritten" The Gaslight Anthem
"Writing Letters" Dead to Me
"Redemption Song" Bob Marley
and any version of "Ave Maria" that's acapella or accompanied by piano (not for religious reasons per se, just because it's been played at so many funerals I've been to that it automatically makes me think of loss)

I'm sure there are others--I didn't even get into the stuff I like in Spanish--but that's enough for now. I'd give explanations, but this would end up essay-length... Here's hoping there will be many more in the future.

Off the top of my head

Redemption - Frank
Father's Day (The Second Three Years Version) - Frank
The District Sleeps Alone Tonight - Frank's cover
Underwear - Pulp (strange one for me, the song brings up some emotions I'd rather keep down that aren't necessarily to do with the song but the song reminds me of them if that makes sense)
Like A Friend - Pulp
Ryan Adams - Lucky Now
Suede - Still Life
The River - Springsteen
Too Much Love Will Kill You - Queen
crap at dancing and can't hold my drink...

New Model Army- The Ballad of Bodmin Pill

The Jam- Down in the tube station at midnight ( kicks me in the gut then gets me angry. Basically 'cos pretty much the same thing happened to me at Turnpike Lane Station)

Oh, and Bob Marleys Redemption Song "duet" sung by Cash and Strummer. Two godlike legends on one song, can't ask for more.

I Know It's Over - The Smiths

One of my favourite tracks by them. Evan told me about a version by Jeff Buckley a while ago which is also good but the original is just beautiful.

Just in case you don't know it

Currently "Tell Tale Signs" by Frank just rips me apart whenever I spin it. It was like he wrote it about me, just change Amy to Cristen, sigh.
