my 8 month old enjoyed listening the other day - admittedly - he can't talk yet ... his fav track was Time Machine which he totally rocked out to with his maracas ....

My boyfriend broke up with me on Thursday and I've been in the pathetic, unable to leave the house without crying stage for the last few days. You know the whole, if someone even mentions the word "green" I manage to connect it with "but he used to sometimes wear that green shirt and now I'm reminded of him and I'm going to be all pathetic again"

So anyway, I was very pleased to have something to be excited about today. I love it. The lyrics to a lot of the songs seem so close to my heart right now. "Plain Sailing Weather" just speaks to me so much. I really love "The Way I Tend to Be" and "Recovery" too. I've been listening to a few songs on repeat for hours and hours while I go about my day. I know it sounds pathetic but this album is the first thing that's cheered me up for days.

Thank you Frank, for having a song for every single emotion I seem to experience. I've always been amazed how you manage to so perfectly put into words the feelings I can never properly explain. The more I listen to it, the better it gets!

Listening all weekend as it popped through the door Friday.
Its an instant win for me! Can't wait to see Frank live post album release to hear more of these songs live.

Despite the obvious greats, like Four Simple Words (loved by my wife and I so much it was our first dance song!)

I am particularly loving Tell tale signs at the moment, feel like this might be the most personal of Franks songs... and that's saying something! Hope it features in the live line up.

Other fav at moment is Plain Sailing Weather

Slight reservations on Broken Piano at moment , it doesn't instantly grab me, and there's a bit where Franks voice reminds me of Cold play!

Final note, listening on headphones at work today, I'm sure in O Brother I hear the 2 note bit before the chorus of Smells like teem spirit just after the line about Frank knowing the chords to teen spirit. Nice touch if so!

Me too, first time I listened to Recovery, I kept thinking 'I know this song!'. Then I realised it was Rudderless by the Lemonheads that it reminded me of. It's the piano piece, it sounds like the 'ship without a rudders like a ship with out a rudders like a ship without a rudder' bit:

Edit: Just noticed you were only talking about the title, but nevermind!

When I first listened to Tape Deck Heart, early this morning, I was a tad worried as it didn't "grab" me, but after only a few listens, the repeat listening reaps so many rewards, Fisher King Blues is my favourite track so far, the last minute or so of that song are going to be epic when played live. Cycling home from work tonight with Four Simple Words ringing in my ears is a truly joyous experience, I think I may have scared a few people singing/shouting out loud!!

Well Done Frank on another great album and I am sure that in a few days I shall be boring everybody with how great this album is and wondering how come I didn't "get it" on first listen.

It's the first time that I've posted on here for quite a few years now I think. But I came on especially to say good work Frank. I got this today and it is rather epic.

I'm going to try and make an effort to get online more, I just don't seem to get the time much nowadays.

Names I remember, Evan, Rubber_soul, actually there are a load more but my mind is a blank it's been so long. I hope you are all well.

I have to say, the album didn't grab me instantly but I like it more and more with each listen.

Love the first 8 tracks, really pleased The Way I Tend To Be is the next single, I find myself grinning like an idiot when it comes on haha.

I do really like Tell Tale signs, but it's a bit too close to the bone for me. Listening to it around other people makes me fairly uncomfortable, so I'm slightly apprehensive about hearing it live, it might be my 'go hide at the back' song.

Big fan of Polaroid Picture, though it had me in tears while stuck in traffic, which was kinda embarrassing haha.

I think Broken Piano is definitely a grower, at first I didn't get it at all, but it's fast becoming one of my favourites.

The Fisher King Blues is going to be my Balthazar of this album I think (i.e the one everyone else LOVES and I'm not really sure why) but I've basically slightly ruined it for myself as in my head, the Fisher King is this guy: Image

But I take comfort in the knowledge that I wasn't the only one who thought that haha.

All in all, I think it's a great album, the songs I didn't like at first are really growing on me, and I hope it does really well :)

I'm hoping I become one of those people who can say "the album grew on me and now I love it."

I like it, of course. There are some amazing songs like Four Simple Words, The Way I Tend To Be and Polaroid Picture, but there are others which feel more like filler for now. I really don't get either Fisher King Blues or Broken Piano, but that's a lot more to do with me than the songs themselves.

It will of course get much more of a listen over the next few weeks! One thing about this album I'm very happy about is that in the last 2 years I've seen Frank 6 times, so I feel like I've watched this album progress bit by bit, hearing songs as they grow. :)

Comment on iTunes (US): "If it wasn't for their 'Single of the Week' I would have never discovered this guy. I love his vocals!"

The cult of Frank is going to explode..... :D

managed to hold out until John Kennedy's play back because I am sucker for those things, and really enjoyed both the show and the album so now listening again right now.
Was worried as I know of a couple of people who haven't been grabbed instantly but for me having so many references to places I can identify with like Astoria, Battersea Power Station and the muddy Thames banks has made me love this album from the off. For example I can see what I affectionately call the Dead Dog from my window

I can't really relate to break up songs on the whole but this is an interesting angle of him singing from the point of instigator and not the left behind downtrodden forgotten lover.
Tell Tale Signs was a song I was really looking forward to just based on the title and hearing it is in part related to two of my favourite Frank songs was a bit of a cherry on top. I know he has had to go through some sort of hell to get that trilogy together but I kinda like Amy because I have those songs to listen to now

minidazzler wrote:Just listening to Wanderlust there, given the subject of the song and that it is the last track on the deluxe edition, it's pretty much a pre-cursor to Tape Deck Heart.... It's kinda like a spiritual "first" track.
I love this so much.
smige2 wrote:I think it's an album of two halves - the transition between Tell Tale Signs and Four Simple Words seems a bit bizarre until you realise TTS is the last track on side A of the vinyl, and FSW the first of side B. There seems to be a thematic division between the halves - whilst the first deals more specifically with the 'break-up', side B embraces the broader themes of impermanence and how it relates to other matters, such as friendship. Speaking of which, I like how Oh Brother is one of the final tracks; it's as though after all the heartache, Frank is saying you can find comfort in platonic love.
I get jarred by TTS - FSW every time and never got that. Maybe this will help!

My review. I've tried to angle it differently, would like to know what you think.

Franks way of saying 'bros before hoes' is how I see it. :P
