Does anyone ever worry about music related tattoos??

Post by KangarooAlice » Sun Dec 23, 2012 2:01 am

I've been thinking about this recently, and it's nice to get the opinion of people other than family etc. Are music tattoos a good idea? For example, at the moment an 'I Still Believe' tattoo is incredibly relevant, but who knows what may occur in the future? I was talking to someone today who said the music industry is essentially just a money making/PR scheme, which altered (if reluctantly!) my outlook. If this is sadly true (?), then music tattoos seem a bad choice?

Whenever I consider a tattoo might be a good idea, I try to imagine myself explaining what it means to my grandchildren in about 40 years' time.

And obviously choosing a tattoo directly referencing a band is potentially a very bad idea -- I imagine there are one or two people desperately trying to hide Lostprophets tattoos right now, as an example. :?

I have lyrics on my arm. They are there to remind me to make the best of life. To enjoy myself and not be so negative. They have been there since February ( planned from november) they were not chosen cos of who sang them they were chosen for the way they make me feel the way they make me look at life. I was made redundant 31 december 2011 and returned to an old job. I was dreading it but the tattoo helped remind me to change my outlook and 2012 has been an amazing year.
If a tattoo is chosen for the right reasons it shouldn't matter where your inspiration came from.

They are a good idea, but choose carefully and think about it for sometime first. Colours tend to fade badly over time..
I work as a care assistant and have to help old people taking baths. I think it's a cool idea that I will still have my tattoo years ahead and may have to answer questions about its origins to whoever will bath me!

You'll have your tattoo every day. You'll see it every day. That means you'd better like it. But it also means that what it means for you will change over time; the way I think about some of my older ink is pretty different to how I thought about it when I got it done. But it still marks time and place, and is important.

Plus, personally, I guess I'm just not that precious about my appearance. Some people want to go out with the same body they started with. Boring! Tattoos show you've might have lived, if nothing else.
Shows? All of em.

Just regarding the I Still Believe tattoo's.

Technically they are not bad idea's for tattoo's. I think I am right in presuming, and would like Frank to correct me, but it's not about believing in the industry, it's about believing in the music and the musicians, not some faceless corporation.

So saying I still believe is saying that you trust that while the popular music may not be great or to your taste there will ALWAYS be music out there that you can find and love.
I'd rather be the one who loves than to be loved and never even know.

Yeah what Frank said! I think with any tattoo, wether it´s music related or something else you might some day wonder "why did I make this one" or "why on this part of the body when it could´ve been better somewhere else", but then it´s a memory from who you were when you made it. Tattoos are like a visible diary on your body. But just beware, you can´t just do one...soon you want another one, and another one and... ;) Happy holidays!

I often use Frank as an example when talking about tattoos... mostly because a lot of what he has is to my taste, but also because when he talks about his tattoos he has reasons (being drunk is a reason ;-) Texas... lol ) for getting them, but also because of the placement of his tattoos. I love the way that he has balanced them down his arms. Those Gibson F-holes ;-)

I see so many people who get something done because on that day they like that image... they don't really give it too much thought and afterwards don't like it as much as they thought they would, and often hide them, change them or get them removed

I also know a lot of people who really think about what they want, they have an idea, they work on it, they talk to their tattooist about it, they draw it on themselves to check for size and placement, and then think about it some more. ALL of these people LOVE their tattoos! Most of them have got more than one meaning behind their tattoos as well - its not just a band tattoo or a lyric, its a reminder of a person/place/event in their lives that might have little or nothing to do with the band or the song or the graphic that they get done.

If I was going to give advice, I would say THINK -

why do you want it?
where do you want it?
are you sure?
have you tried it out to check placement/size/design?
still want this one?
still want it a month later?
still want it 2 months later?
are you answers still the same as when you first decided you wanted this?

if they are - get the tattoo done :-)

(and then take a pic so I can see..)

PS - your tattoo is YOURS, its YOUR choice and inked into YOUR skin, go with what YOU want to go with! Its YOU that will have to live with it :-)

Is your latest tattoo Hermes? can you tell the story behind it?

fthc (Frank Turner) (October 12, 2012)

Yes. Keenan Nichols, guitarist in the band The Architects (from Kansas City MO) is an amazing artist, I wanted a Hermes design, so I asked him to draw something up. I got it inked by Aaron in Birmingham AL.

any special reason for Hermes? He was sort of a go between for mortals and gods as I remember... possibly also a protector of sorts for travelers? (which would make sense given the travelling you do I guess???)

Yeah god of travellers and poets, among other things.
