The ones that always stand out in my memory are...
Funeral for a Friend at Swansea Patti Pavilion in 2002/3(?)
Million Dead at Truck Festival in 2004
Alexisonfire at Cardiff Uni in 2005(ish)
Sigur Ros at Westminster Central Hall in 2008

In terms of FT his show at the 100 Club in 2008 was probably my favourite
23/10/06 - 5/2/07 – 20/9/07 – 13/12/07 – 23/4/08 - 25/5/08 – 29/10/08 – 28/3/09 – 26/6/09 – 24/3/10

The one gig that just edges it over the other gigs was Paul McCartney at Anfield in 2008 for Liverpool Sound. Fantastic from start to finish including the supports. I took my mum as an early birthday present and she loved it too. I was definitely the favourite child that year!

Theres a few other gigs that are a pretty close call, including one later that same week.

If I can include festival performances, Foo Fighters at Leeds this year, they were incredible, even better than at Milton Keynes last year.
Outside of that for a single gig probably The King Blues at Stoke which, as it turned out, was their last show, leave a bitter taste a little now knowing about all the politics backstage and it being revealed how much of a prick Itch is, but that night it was near enough perfect.

Best gig

So difficult to choose, I’ve been to so many, and there were a number of excellent ones all for different reasons.

Ones that really stand out would be…

1) The first time I ever saw Four Day Hombre (who are still going, now called Hope & Social) at the Faversham in Leeds in 2000. I had no idea what to expect, but they had been recommended by a number of people. They totally blew me away! Great energy, great interaction with the crowd, very friendly people, and tunes I was humming not just on the way home, but still several days later having only heard them once ever!

2) Dead Can Dance reunion show at Olympia Theatre Dublin in 2005. I’m not a fan of seated gigs as a rule so wasn’t sure about this one from the start, and I remember walking in and seeing so many instruments on stage that I immediately groaned. Sound is so important and there was an orchestra worth or percussion up there. It could have been terrible but it wasn’t. The sound was crystal clear for every single instrument, every vocal was precise and perfect. Lisa Gerrard also the most amazing breath control I have ever seen. I’ve also - up till then anyway – never seen a hammered dulcimer played. Lisa plays with uncanny speed that in itself was truly breath taking to see. I had goosebumps from the first note of the set until about an hour after the gig finished. Truly a stand out gig.

3) Frank’s Newport gig on 23rd November 2011; for several reasons. I flew over for the gig and the flight went well – always a good start. My B&B was amazing. I met some wonderful people while I was queuing to get in, and chatted to some lovely people after the gig too, including Emily Barkers tour manager – who once did sound for Brendan Perry (the other half of Dead can Dance)!

Laura Jane Grace was ill that night so Against Me weren’t playing. I was disappointed right up until the amazing Franz Nicolay stepped on to the stage. Frank had told me about him so I watched some youtube videos but never imagined I would get to see him live. He was better live than any of the videos I had seen at that point. He talks a lot, but its both informative and funny – a real entertainer. He’s also a true multi-instrumentalist. Playing a solo show with a guitar, then swapping to a banjo for the next song, changing that for an accordion for the next song… and I hate accordions. Franz really makes the accordion work for him though – I actually enjoyed him playing it.

Then we got Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo who also blew me away. I only knew two of the songs before hand, but loved every song they played. Usually there is at least one song in someone’s set that I find I like less well than the others – but this night I loved every single song by every person on stage.

And of course Frank sang Fields of June with them – Love that song.

Frank’s set was brilliant. He played every song I wanted to hear. It felt like his set list had been written with me in mind and we got a new song as well (Cowboy Chords). I even got to say Hi to Frank, Emily, Franz, Anna and Jo afterwards. It didn’t rain, so I got back to where I was staying dry and safe and the flight back went well – stunning! This almost never happens to me!

Too many for too many reasons, but here's some:

Sigur Ros at Ally Pally 2008
Iron Maiden at Twickenham 2008
Frank at The Roundhouse (I forget the year, 2010?)
Converge at Reading Fez Club 2007
Funeral For A Friend at Birmingham Academy some time around 2003/04.
Million Dead, Shrewsbury Teenage Kicks Festival 2004.
Rage Against The Machine Finsbury Park 2010
Sikth at Birmingham Academy 2003

That's 8. There are more but I imagine no one's that interested. Next! :P

saw Eureka Machines on Emmerdale tonight... I see Chris is still doing split jumps on stage :D

have to say every single Catylyst gig was truly a fun and wonderful evening.

funnily enough I was talking about him yesterday and remembering the first acoustic night at Joseph's Well when he covered My Way on 12 string guitar.... that was quite a night to remember too :D

sigh

I miss Leeds. Good place for gigs!

Predictable answer, but the first time I saw Bruce Springsteen can't be beaten. I have the ticket in a frame on the wall....
Frank's shows come pretty close though, particularly on exhilaration and sheer enjoyment levels.

Seeing Muse do Origin of Symmetry in full at Leeds and Reading festivals probably tops my list. There isn't much that gets me on an airplane but when they announced they were doing that I knew I had to be there. I still can't believe that 1) that show happened and 2) I got to see it, twice. Plus I got to enjoy it with a lot of friends from around the world.
Hard to decide though. Every time I see Frank it ends up being a candidate for "best gig ever" ... I'd have a hard time picking just one to call the best. I've also enjoyed the hell out of every Muse gig I've done. Beyond that lots of different gigs have been special to me. I have a place in my heart for gigs I went to as a kid (Descendents in '97), big arena gigs (Coldplay in 2008 ... don't laugh; that gig got me back into the world of live music after many years of reclusivity), stadium stuff (Muse at Wembley '10 or Roger Waters this year) and stuff in dark little clubs (Biffy Clyro at Rock N Roll Hotel in DC in 2011).
