Your all time Top 10 Frank Turner songs???

Post by Bossman66 » Thu Sep 06, 2012 7:08 pm

Hi everyone

Got the idea for this from a friend running a similar exercise for the Top 20 Bruce Springsteen songs over on his btx forum.

I don't propose to do scoring as they're doing over there, unless anyone wants to take that task on?

The Premise is simple. Frank's got a fair few albums under his belt now & we are all aware of some of the new songs not yet released. The objective is to pick your (& OUR if anyone does want to score it, 10 points for no1 down to 1 point for no10, all time favourites SO FAR. Not necessarily the 10 songs you consider best, but your favourites for whatever reason.

It's strictly the SONG that matters, so it doesn't matter if you like it cos you love the song or 1 particular version or it speaks to you for some other reason, and you are not required to state studio, live, the gig date etc (it's the SONG that matters). It's nice if you want to give reasons cos it makes it more interesting but if anyone does choose to take on the task of scoring it, it may help if you bolded the numbers & the titles if you gave elongated reasons.

The only other rule is they must be Frank originals or shared compositions, not covers.

Here's mine to start:

1. I Still Believe - The essence of Rock N Roll
2. Long Live The Queen - Moves me
3. Redemtion - I wasn't NOT gonna pick a song that mentions Bruce!
4. Father's Day - I somehow overlooked it until I saw it live.
5. Song For Eva Mae - concise & speaks to me - I've not seen my god-daughter for over 15 years although we are in
touch. I bought her the album last Christmas
6. Cowboy Chords - I really think this is brilliant! Will be gutted if it's not on LP5!
7. Sailor's Boots - Frank played solo acoustic supporting Gaslight Anthem first time I saw him - love that style!
8. Wessex Boy - I love songs I can picture - Although I've never been to Winchester this conjures up an image in my
mind
9. Rivers - Not my favourite song but this is as British by Frank, as 'Thunder Road' is American by Bruce
10. Photosynthesis - Brilliant show closer!

I have to tell you that was as difficult to decide as my Bruce Top 20, maybe because I don't profess to quite follow Frank as much as Bruce, and don't feel I understand the songs quite as well.

Looking forward to seeing your thoughts everyone.

Amy worked in a bar in Exeter, Springsteen came clear in my headphones - Frank, did you write these lyrics for me?

If it proves successful, maybe Frank will give it a 'sticky' for a few months?

Sounds interesting.......

However, within a minute, I had 20 favorites. Gonna be hard to "cull out keepers" (fishing lingo). Gotta give it some thought when I'm off my iPhone.

Scoring wouldn't be hard with a group this size. You could just make an easy spreadsheet and maybe post the top ten every week so people can see what folks are digging.

Cheers! Darlene

Ok, maybe I'll add the scores up once a week if I have time. i'm no good at spreadsheets though so it'll be a manual exercise for me.

Culling them is the hard part. It's supposed to really make you think about which are your favourites.

I have trouble choosing 50 Bruce songs, let alone the 20 I had to get it down to.

@Bossman: it would be a pain in the ass to score by hand. How about I tally them on a spreadsheet and email it to you each week, and you can do with it whatever you want?

If you like, but if you're gonna tally it up for me, you might like to just post it here once a week or fortnight depending how many replies there are.......???

Sorry, 'fortnight' is an English term for 2 weeks. Obviously not widely used in the US - my bad!

I'm happy for you to post it. To be honest, I'm not that bothered with getting an 'Our' overall ranking. I just like seeing other's opinions & comments. Sometimes makes you think harder about a song & reconsider it. It's why I swap Top10 albums of the year with some of my friends in early December, to see what others think & give a listen to something I might've missed.

Top 10's - Nick Hornby could've written 'High Fidelity' with me in mind! Lol

1) redemption - Obviously deeply personal to Frank, you can hear the emotion, love the way it builds. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
2) sea legs - reminds me of our trip to Sweden, following Frank knowing this was probably the last time we'd see him play to no-one anywhere in the world. It was too, until he takes on South America or Russia or somewhere!
3) Imperfect tense - just a great rock song.
4) The ballad of me and my friends -so many fantastic gigs, big and small
5) Love ire and song - Reminds me of my left wing flirtations of my younger days "idiot fucking hippies in 50 different factions, who are locked inside some kind of 60's battle re-enactment"
6) A love worth keeping - I love the way it builds and builds and the breaks out into massive drums.
7) St Christopher is coming home - I like to play this going to work on a Monday, also reminds me of a specific Birmingham academy gig.
8.) try this at home - "the only thing that punk rock should ever really mean is not sitting round and waiting for the lights to turn green". Inspiration for life!
9) Hold your tongue - The way its so poisonous in such a nice way it's almost Shakespearean!
10) must try harder - "I could be so much better than I am" "I don't know what I want, but this is not it". At my worst, this is me.
