Applied for 2 new jobs recently, had some assessments last week and found out today that I passed them so have interviews tomorrow and Thursday.

Wasnt too worried about first one until I went into work today to swot up and saw that everyone else is shitting themselves about it... Now I'm panicking slightly thinking I havent done enough prep and I'll feel like a total dick if I dont get either job.

There's no real point to this I dont think, just a brief stress reducing vent, and maybe a wee bit of luck if anyone has any spare haha

I went for a pretty amazing job a while back and attended an assessment centre in Brussels. One of the tasks for the day was to give a presentation to two people lasting up to 10 minutes on a specified topic. We were given 20 minutes to prepare, a wad of flip-chart paper and a felt pen.

I read the briefing notes, digested them, put a quick discussion together in my head, and estimated it would take about 90 seconds to cover the whole thing in appropriate detail. I didn't even touch the paper or pens.

Everyone else in the room began drawing up multiple pages of copious notes. Some of them even asked for more paper. Once our 20 minutes were up, our pens and paper were taken away and we were told the presentation would take place a few hours. A couple of people looked noticeably troubled that they hadn't managed to finish their epic long presentation in the given time, and worried about it in the intervening period.

I arrived at my presentation. My two audience members asked me if I needed to set up anything, I said no. I sat down, gave my 90 second spiel and asked if there were any further questions. They asked a couple of quick questions to make sure I understood, and then said that was fine. We talked about the job, living in Belgium, and all the amazing places they'd been for the remaining time I had with them.

I have no idea what the others managed to pad out their time with. All I know is that even though I narrowly missed out on the job by a frustratingly small margin, when I got the feedback I know I scored very highly on that bit. They said my brevity and clarity was appropriate for the topic matter.

tl;dr - just because everyone else is doing it, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. Particularly when you're at a job interview. You'll hardly stand out if you do what everyone else does. If you've already done all the right preparation, why would you risk all that by changing the plan at the last minute because of everyone else?

Wow, great response, thanks. Loving Springer's final thought! (Though I did feel a bit like a kid being told off, 'I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed' haha) You're right though, reading this last night actually made me chill out and meant I was able to get some sleep rather than worrying about it.

I got a job in London today that I have been working towards getting for over a month. I am ridiculously excited at the prospect of moving there. And there has been a wee bit of celebrating going on with my mates.

But it hit me about an hour ago that I am moving to a large city where I know no one. Terror is steadily setting in.

Everyone hates everyone else here, so no one really knows anyone else...it's all good.

Seriously though, well done getting the job and it may be daunting but it's great living here, you'll love it.

I just got an short internship at the royal vet college equine referral centre. I'm excited to get it, but it runs from 23rd dec to 8th of jan. It's based mainly at potters bar.

First xmas i won't be with my family, which is wierd.

Oh and Frank, if you wouldn't mind doing a NYE show around that area that'd be great please? ;)

I'm scared!

Thanks newmy! yeah I got the feeling that people aren't quite as approachable as I am used to. I smiled and said morning to a guy who was in the same reception area as me, and he looked at me like I had two heads... I guess I'm not in Kansas anymore.

I have a plan of attack tho, just attend as many gigs as possible and find some like minded people :D

Also, Nellied don't worry to much about not bein with your family on xmas. In my experience it means they put more thought into what gifts they give you, and you get 1 or 2 'fake Christmas' dinners which are much less stressful and generally more pleasant than the real thing. Congrats on the internship!

I keep drinking the cider i've bought for Leeds, so now i'm going to have to go and buy some more. But I don't have any money left, so i'm round collecting up loose change and hoping thats buys some more.

Alternativly I can just hold off drinking it until thursday, but where's the fun in that?
