Re: I knew Prufrock before he got referenced
Hey, smige-- I studied English as well and I'm impressed. Had I but know about Frank's music during my undergraduate years [though he was still with Million Dead at the time], I might have occupied myself with doing the same. As it was, I dedicated two different essays to Bad Religion [one comparin...

Re: Thoughts about the 2015 concerts setlist
I reckon Recovery, TWITTB and Four Simple Words will be in pretty much every setlist for the foreseeable future, and Plain Sailing Weather probably will too. I agree it'd be nice if We Shall Not Overcome were included more often - it's one of my favourites from that era and I've yet to hear it live.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked them. I can see why you would link Gus with Balthazar - there's definitely an overlap of themes. Perhaps that poem was a subliminal influence on Frank's song.

Re: I knew Prufrock before he got referenced
Good spot, I hadn't made that connection.
I've tried to update my first post with links to the poems but I think you can only post up to three links per post. So here's The Waste Land and Frank's reading of The Dry Salvages.

I knew Prufrock before he got referenced
I’ve always been intrigued by Frank’s frequent references to the poet T. S. Eliot in his lyrics. In fact, Frank’s Prufrock reference was one of the reasons I picked up a book of Eliot’s poems when I was 17, and my consequent fascination with Eliot’s poetry led me to study English at university. I th...

Re: Just a Ghost of Vaudeville?
It sounds like your band just wasn't right for that particular crowd. It's equally possible that a punk band wouldn't go down well at a show consisting mainly of folk acts, so I wouldn't be disheartened. Coincidentally, I'm from the same area as you. I play solo but have very similar influences. Hav...

Ben Marwood
Looks like Marwood's health has taken a turn for the worse and he'll be hanging up his guitar for the foreseeable future. A real shame.

The Mountain Goats
Are you a fan? I hear them in the Weakerthans and Andrew Jackson Jihad, and I know The Hold Steady cite them as an influence (there's a reference to one of their lyrics in 'Girls Like Status'). Personally I love the later stuff (The Sunset Tree, All Eternals Deck, Transcendental Youth etc.) but I fi...

What is the best '...Three Years' compilation?
Now that we have a third rarities collection from Frank, I was wondering which compilation you consider to be the strongest, or which you consider your personal favourite. I listened to The First Three Years earlier and I think it has to get my vote; in my view it's very cohesive for a compilation, ...
