The Confederate States of America

This motley crew is getting a lot of press of late. For the benefit of our European friends, when you hear the word "confederate", think "traitors who believed it was their divine right to own human beings". Just saying. And this tune, from the immortal Bottle Rockets, should be required listening. ...

In Praise of Parent's Music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNqs2lcFN1I Back in the 60s, my late, thoroughly great mom used to put on this song. I'd long since forgotten most of it. Didn't know the title though I had traces of the lyrics rattling around my head, and I knew it was Pearl Bailey. Took a while, but I finally re-co...

In Praise of Regional Bands

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXya45nAy7g More than a decade ago, a Canadian guy I met on-line sent me a mix-tape. I lost track of the guy, but I'm forever appreciative that he included a few songs by Edmonton's Junior Gone Wild. I don't know how much of an audience they earned outside of their lo...

The Possible Silver Lining of a Trump Administration

Might it usher in some blistering, kick-ass songs that are chock full of pungent socio/political commentary? Our nation's garages are full of aspiring, pimple-faced, axe-wielding loudmouths who need look no further than their television sets for inspiration. They're just waiting to slap on a "This M...

Fave Christmas Tune

Frank made a fine selection with The Pogues and I'll offer up mine: Australia's brilliant singer/songwriter, Paul Kelly, doing How To Make Gravy. Imagine how utterly miserable Christmas must be if you're behind bars. That's the set-up for this gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoJxigEuVC4 Peter T.

a "best of" CD by these Aussies. Never found out if he liked or even played it. I know some of the Smith Street guys dig em, and you should too!

I know there's at least one rocking history nerd on this message board.
You don't have to dig Tolstoy to appreciate this tune!

This just in: a Bottle Rockets documentary has just been released on-line. It's a nice blend of music and memories. I hope it can be viewed outside the USA. Enjoy (if you can)!

Re: A Great Alt/Country Band: The Bottle Rockets

Glad to jog your memory, but truth be told, Brand New Year is one of my least favorite Bottle Rockets' albums. Still, it contains their magnificent ode to the reluctance most of us feel getting up in the AM. "Gotta Get Up", is a Ramonesesque song that sleep aficionados everywhere can embrace! :) htt...

A Great Alt/Country Band: The Bottle Rockets

Frank has mentioned that he's been listening to a lot of country music lately. At his recent New Hampshire show, I asked him if he knew of The Bottle Rockets. He didn't...but he should. A label such as "Alt/Country" has its limitations but in this case it gives a reasonable approximation of how this...

Re: What Music Did You First Buy with your Own Money?

The Monkees first album, called, coincidentally, and unimaginatively, The Monkees. And it's not half-bad. Mike Nesmith could write and play!

Positive Songs For A Desert Island

What songs would comprise your ultimate mix-tape, your desert island favorites? And you can only limit yourself to one song per artist. I tried to limit myself to 20 artists but didn't succeed. Perhaps my list will inspire a few readers to offer up their own favorites or to sample something previous...

Father's Day

It's Father's Day here in the USA (not sure if it is for our friends elsewhere) so I thought I'd share a terrific song from down under. It preceded Frank's version by at least a decade and was song of the year in Australia in the 90s. Should it agree with you, you might seek out Trophy Night, by Wed...

Desert Island Artists

A few friends and I recently swapped lists of the bands/artists we have most connected with and more importantly, why. I couldn't limit myself to 10 or 20, so sue me. :) I hope others will open up and share. Peter T. 1. (A) Springsteen, because he opened my eyes to wider horizons and endless possibi...
