Ive never argued for a socialist state, my argument is that deregulation causes as many problems as it solves. Isn't your whole argument for free markets a bit of a joke when the bottom line is "apart from some really important things, which we will regulate"? If such special cases included large mi...

That not what he said or meant, but its what it comes down to isn't it? No one in Whitehall is going to turn round on monday morning and say "you know what guys, its probably best if we leave them to it, lets all piss off down the nags head". When you say "there will always be special cases", who sh...

Frank said thats its not about 100% free markets, but getting as close this point as possible. In reality don't you fear that light touch regs are all your going to get? Which as you put it is the worst of both worlds. In which case, whats the point in trying, other than to relieve work induced bore...

I was talking about Enron's exploitation of deregulated energy markets as mentioned previously. I'm still waiting for an answer as to how this would have been any different under complete deregulation.

You in fact deflected from the discussion of free markets. Enron is the perfect example of the failings of a deregulated market.

No state owned energy supplier ever shut down perfectly good power plants to force prices up, causing widespread blackouts along the way.

That was only partial deregulation, which is why what happened happened. How would things have turned out differently under complete deregulation? As LLTF says, companies collude and price fix to implement their own special form of "regulation". Interesting to see your friend promoting private scho...

Should have seen that coming, what I meant was do you really think that deregulation would lead to all the promises freemarketeers make? I'm thinking deregulated energy markets in the us, the enron and California saga etc .

Though I also think it's worth mentioning that there isn't really a totally unregulated, and therefore perfect, free market anywhere in the world. Government intervention and regulation creates crony and state endorsed capitalism which reduces the free market's benefits significantly. I think Milto...

certainly was reading something about african income levels continuing to climb (must find link) through the crisis. I'd be careful frank, finding any reliable economic stats after 2008 is not likely. economists very rarely plot meaningful data more recently than 2 or 3 years ago, as collection and...

I would not discount that during periods of widespread growth, free markets increases the GDP of many developing countries. However, Worstall's article is frankly dogshit. I know a blog article is always going to have limited scope, but to completely ignore the negative aspects of free markets, and ...
